A question of sound

Good morning, I am a long time ROS user and have bought a Pi specifically to run RISC OS on – which I am very happy with and think is awesome. However, I have one little niggle that I wonder if anyone can advise me with. I am using an HDMI to VGA adapter cable which works fine on hdmi_drive=2 but not hdmi_drive=1 is seems – and as such sound is being sent through HDMI which my adapter swallows up. Is there any way to force ROS to use analog rather than digital sound (I read for the Linux port it is possible to force Alsa to do this) or has anyone else seen a similar problem and managed to figure a way around it? Alternatively, does anyone know of an adapter at a reasonable price that will give me an audio jack on too? Apart from the sound it is all working great, and getting some audio is the last hurdle before my aging RPC gets replaced as the main ROS machine. Nick |

Just incase anyone else has this issue in the future I thought I would reply to my own question about how I managed to get sound working. Basically, I tried everything in the config settings and nothing seemed to get it working with my existing (very cheap) HDMI adapter. I even used an old composite to VGA converter I have, to run it from the composite video out, but the quality was aweful. In the end I upgraded my HDMI-VGA converter and purchased one which has audio output and is run from an external power source (I have read about cheap adapters running from the Pi itself blowing a diode on the board.) I bought a 1080 ultimate converter for £16 from ebay – still cheap but the video quality is good and as I say gives an audio jack. Nick |
