Risc OS 6 and compatibility

I have just downloaded Risc OS 6 and was disappointed to find that !WimpBar is not supported, I find this program very useful and will be lost without it. Does anyone know of an update or can suggest an alternative? |

Could you please stop posting any old question in the “Announcements” Forum? The first link is not always the best. |

At this point, ignoring the issue of asking questions in Announcements rather than say Community Support and ignoring the issue that this is a set of Forums for the RO5.x branch rather than the 4.x branch, I feel I should point out that WimpBar2 does appear to work on RO5.x and the “History” file in the archive says "v1.67 (13 Jan 2003) <— ** This version is the first 26/32-bit neutral release of WimpBar 2 " I have no knowledge of the viability of WimpBar2 v1.67 on the RO4.x branch other than the link page on Filebase noting that RO2 – 4.0x and RO5.0x are OK and Select is unknown/untested. |

My questions are not “any old questions”, to me they are important! I thought I was doing the correct thing, but have now looked down the list and imagine the best place for my “any Old Questions” is community support. |

I found a !WimpBar on the APDL site in b412.zip which reports itself as WimpBar by Steve Smale, version 1.18 (06-Oct-95) which looks to be OK on OS6.20 here. The application is BASIC in an Absolute wrapper. It also ran on the Titanium. |

I assume you wan’t to say “I have just bought RISC OS 6”. To download it illegally would be quite astounding, since RISC OS 5 is free and Open Source, and RISC OS 6 is commercial but not developed any more. Anyway the RISC OS Open website is for RISC OS 5 only. I’m sorry you did not receive a warm welcome, but – really – you’re not at the right place. RISC OS 6 support is there: http://groups.google.com/group/riscosselect |

Really? Did it really take this many posts to berate someone with a low post count? Surely just moving it to the correct section and editing the post to say why would have been so much better. |

I have just downloaded Risc OS 6 RISC OS 6.20 is available for immediate download.
As I recall it was ROOL’s intention that this forum be for all users of RISC OS. |

I don’t see Steffen’s post as berating – the low post count amounts to seven questions, all posted in Announcements. And, yes, Community Support is a better place to ask questions.
…once you’ve handed over £20, so not quite immediate. ;-)
The forums are for all users, though being “the home of RISC OS 5”, one should expect a better degree of support for 5 than others, especially those with unknown source (so the sort of technical stuff that Jeffrey and Jon are talking about would be guesswork rather than fact… |

Is that even possible? If it is, none of those who have posted in this thread have the admin rights to do it, as far as I know. |

Not that I am aware of. There have been some petty points in the postings above. Please, let’s keep this a welcoming place. As for the different versions of RISC OS, I hope we are all looking forward to a new version (RISC OS 7?) which will incorporate the best features of all the versions. |

Yes I have paid for Risc OS 6. Not sure I am that happy with it! |

Ah, a golden oldie. Did we ever establish a consensus on what was better in the other branch and what people would happily forget? A topic best discussed in Wish List… |

Brexit lost its piquant? |

Well thats a good analogy as far as RISCOS 6 is concerned in that: Thats what you get when you go down a route with no future. Or thats what happens when you have delay after delay or thats what happens when you lose the support of those who invest or thats what happens when the so called benefits are really not tangible. So maybe I’m unkind to RISCOS 6 as it was good in it’s day but just like Brexit it shows what can quickly become a lost and irrelevant case and a bywater to obscurity :-) |

It wasn’t an analogy, it was sarcasm. |

@ Alan, try Paul Vigay’s NextBar available at www.vigay.com/software/nextbar.html It might be worth you going to the RISC OS 6 support site as they may be able to help with lists of known software that works on that particular OS Regards |
