I’m pleased to announce that version 2.10b (b for beta) of Transient is available for download from my website About Transient Transient is a utility which provides a temporary directory on your hard disc, creating a new subdirectory every day to help you organise files. You can use it like a RAM disc – drag files to it, save files to it – but the files will remain on the hard disc until you delete them. If so desired, the directories can be expired automatically when they’ve reached a certain age. What’s changed In this release the regular version of Transient has been merged with the v2.08 version that provided support for the TrapDelete module. New is the SaveToPin module which allows saving files to Transient by just drag-dropping them onto the Pinboard’s backdrop. Mouse clicks on the iconbar icon are now user-definable allowing quick access to specific users. TrapDelete module The TrapDelete module traps deletes through FilerAction sending the Filer objects to be deleted to Transient instead, allowing Transient to be used as a trashcan. The location where the objects came from is recorded so that it’s possible to restore the objects to their original location. Using a filter rule, deleted objects trapped by TrapDelete can be aimed at a particular user keeping then separate from other objects that have been moved/saved to Transient. SaveToPin module Files can be temporarily saved to Transient when the intended target directory isn’t open. At a later time the file can moved to the target directory. On today’s large screens dragging from an application’s savebox to Transient’s iconbar icon can be inconvenient. It would be easier if files could simply be dropped on the Pinboard’s backdrop. The SaveToPin module allows exactly that, by intercepting the save to the backdrop and converting it to a save to Transient’s iconbar icon. If desired files received from SaveToPin can be filtered to a specific user so that they are easy to find. Iconbar icon clicks Being able to filter objects to different users is useful but to access those objects it’s necessary to switch users which is a bit awkward. It would be better if some directories could be accessed directly. To enable this the mouse clicks on the iconbar icon can now be configured. Up to four clicks can be tied to the Select (left) mouse button (and another four to Adjust (right) mouse button) using the Ctrl and Shift keys. As always all feedback is welcome. |

Great! No more depending on Filer confirm deletes. Can even leave that selected as it only takes effect when Transient isn’t running. Would be nice if the ‘TrapDelete’ user could have the same status as the "default’ one so it could be selected as a ‘Select click’ option rather than a ‘current user’. This to separate the Bin/Trash function from the RAM disc concept. |

That’s what the filter rules are for, set in the Rules tab in the choices window. See Manual > Configuration > Rules. The bottom line of that page has links to examples for patterns and rules. The example rules show how to keep files from TrapDelete (and SaveToPin) separate from objects from other sources. You can access the TrapDelete user quickly too by going to the Clicks tab in the choices window and setting up a click for the TrapDelete user, eg for plain (ie without modifiers) Adjust: TrapDelete – Today dir. Beware though that putting objects back or deleting them from the TrapDelete user is best done through the Restoration window, otherwise the restore data won’t be updated. |

Doh! I understood the rule setup but failed to notice that that user then became available in the ‘Clicks’ choices. |
