Archive Magazine returns this month (October)

Archive, the magazine for RISC OS users, returns later this month, October 2020. Archive is now under new management after the sad death of Jim Nagel earlier this year. Archive has been published since 1987 in support of RISC OS and continues to be produced entirely on RISC OS. While Archive is published as a paper magazine, the previous issue of Archive can be downloaded as a free PDF as a tribute from the Nagel brothers to their father. It is available for download at http://www.archivemag.co.uk. Going forward, Archive will be published on a regular, bimonthly schedule. Deadlines for articles and news items can be found at http://www.archivemag.co.uk/+prices.php – for the next issue, the deadline is 5th October (but if you’re a supplier, I hope you have already heard from me by now!). Archive has some fantastic content in the works for Volume 25 and I hope you will support us! If you are interested in subscribing, please see http://www.archivemag.co.uk/+prices.php If you have any news, ideas for articles, comments or suggestions, please email me at gavin@archivemag.co.uk, find me on !ChatCube at !gvnsmth, DM me on Twitter at @archiveriscos and @gvnsmth or even write to me at Archive Magazine, PO Box 171, Portstewart, BT52 9BW Archive 25:1 is coming soon… |

Are existing subscriptions being honoured? Not that I’m really bothered! |

See "Are you an existing “Nagel” subscriber?" at http://www.archivemag.co.uk/+prices.php The uncomfortable reality is that there was no monies from Nagel subs available to be sent to myself. One of my goals is to make Archive reliable and self-supporting, so paying for up to two years of subscriptions, for several hundred readers, out of my own pocket wouldn’t have been a good start. I discussed this for a long time with the Nagel brothers and the best thing we could come up with is to optionally fulfil existing Nagel subscriptions as PDFs. However, I really hope that most people would actually prefer the traditional paper format so I have a much-reduced price to “upgrade” any remaining Nagel issues to paper. Just get in touch and I’ll check the database to see how many are left on your sub and give you a price. It’s not an ideal situation but I hope most people consider it as reasonable, considering the circumstances. Now, onwards to victory! |

Which is, I would suggest, pretty close to fulfilling the subscriber expectations of reading material without undue expense. |

Thanks for the news Gavin, Just a question: are you planning to have only new subscriptions for printed copies? Sorry to bother by I ran out of space at home loool, so do you have any plans for digital paid subscriptions? |

PDF subscriptions would be great. |

There are no plans for PDF subscriptions at the moment. My goal right now is to get Archive back up and running and on a stable, regular footing. I’d be concerned that PDF subs would make the paper version less feasible. I had hoped to visit each of the RISC OS shows, plus a number of other non-RISC OS shows and meetings around the UK, to help spread the word, and having a physical magazine that people can pick up, flick through and purchase there and then is much more interesting in those scenarios. Of course, COVID has put paid to that for now but hopefully next year. If you really want a PDF instead of the paper magazine, you can just subscribe as normal and send me a note to let me know you’d prefer digital copies. |

@ Gavin
Thanks, and yes I would totally prefer the paper version, but on the other hand I really can’t throw it away when space needs to be made. so unfortunately I have to prefer the PDF version. Will subscribe and send you the note, thanks a lot! |

This is a quick final call for any news items for Archive 25:1 (Oct/Nov issue). Email gavin@archivemag.co.uk with anything you might have. And if you wanted to contribute to the upcoming issue, but ran out of time, don’t forget there is a further issue to be published this year, Archive 25:2 (Dec/Jan). The deadline for that issue is 30th November (what have I got myself into?!). |

The October/November 2020 issue, volume 25 no.1 arrived on my doormat today. It is excellent. I am very grateful to Rob Sprowson, Jeffrey Lee and Adrian Lees for correcting my more egergious errors in the article on ‘Pi 4 and RISC OS’ and for adding their insight into things RISC OS. |
