Update to !Cat

I am working on an update to !Cat, which shows the content of a disc drive or part thereof. The current version cannot count above 2Gbytes so that has been overdue for a fix. If there are any specific features you would like to see added to !Cat, please let me know. I shall not release version 0.26 until I have finished testing it, so version 0.24 remains the current version. In the new version I have improved a few things and give examples below. The initial display now shows top level objects arranged in descending order of size – this allows a particularly large file to be found wherever it is on the disc. The example below shows the object at top left has been expanded one level (by clicking on it). The find option now looks for any filename containing the text input (previously it would only find an exact filename match) and displays all ocurrences, see example below: |

Filename font size a little smaller, and count font size quite a bit bigger, please! |

Many thanks for the comments. Filename is currently 10 point, size is 4 point. These are easy to change – what about 8 and 6? The display can be zoomed in and out so it is only the relative size that matters. One issue is that individual file sizes are not saved with a saved copy of the contents, so when loaded back in the ‘size’ line will be blank for files and only included for directories. If the user asks for a full graphic draw file of a disc that holds 182000 files (48 Gbytes) then the resulting Draw file would be over 2 Gbytes. While it is held in memory only one copy of each filename sprite is held but writing it out to disc each location has to have its own copy, making the file rather large. I can’t think of any way to tell a Draw file ‘another copy of this sprite over here’! |

!Cat has now been updated to version 0.29 and is available from !Store. The font size has been adjusted as can be seen here: A much improved display is now obtained if you compare two saved ‘DiscCat’ files, i.e. showing the contents of a drive or directory at two different dates. Depending whether you generated CRC data for file contents when creating the ‘DiscCat’ files, it will say whether a file has been deleted, its content changed or its content the same but its datestamp changed. |

Now updated to version 0.30. In response to user comment, the rather terse description of the application has been made a little more detailed. |
