The next meeting of the RISC OS User Group Of London (online) is: The Future of Microprocessors, presented by Sophie Wilson CBE Monday 19th April 2021, 7.45pm Online via Zoom, meeting open from 7.30pm http://www.rougol.jellybaby.net/meetings/ Exactly 11 years since her previous visit to a packed ROUGOL, we are delighted to virtually welcome back Sophie Wilson to talk to us about the development of microprocessors, past, present, and future. Sophie needs little introduction to Acorn/RISC OS users, having been co-designer of the BBC Micro, designer of the ARM instruction set, and author of BBC BASIC (6502 and ARM versions). She is also a Broadcom Fellow and Distinguished Engineer, a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the British Computer Society, and has an honorary doctorate of science from Cambridge University and a CBE. After the talk there will be a Q&A session, providing an amazing opportunity to have those questions that have always puzzled you answered by one of the most influential people on modern computing. This meeting will be held online via Zoom. Please contact us to receive a link to the meeting on the day. If you have last month’s link, it’s the same one! |

Can someone ask her if she’d awfully mind porting her BASIC interpreter from assembler to C? |

Are you not brave enough to ask her yourself, Charlotte? 8~) Edit: understandable if so. I’m not… |

Brandy BASIC exists. |

GPL is a bit unhelpful for putting in a ‘RISC OS 64’ ROM though! |

As Steve and Sophie were responsible for designing the elegant 26 bit ARM instruction set, and she hand crafted BBC Basic in it as proof of concept, asking that would be a sacrilege. |

I thought the next argument about GPL wasn’t due until Wednesday? |

Shh, the war is over, although I expect the pointer was perhaps to not having it in the ROM which would sidestep that neatly.
Ah, if you have a Microsoft watch that starts in a few minutes, or if it’s RO then the announcement will be on the web site in 2025 |

A RISC OS ROM without BASIC? Heresy, I say ;-) |
