The RISC OS London Show Saturday 30th October 2021, open 11am – 5pm St Giles Hotel, Feltham, TW14 9AD 5 pounds on the door, under-16s free http://www.riscoslondonshow.co.uk/ After almost two years of online events, the London Show is once again getting physical! Come along to see familiar (masked) faces, hear the latest news, and get your (sanitised) hands on some new kit. Back at our regular venue, the St Giles Hotel in Feltham, we will have the usual mix of stands where you can chat to developers about their software and hardware, plus a series of theatre presentations for demonstrations and announcements. Keep an eye on the show website for the latest news. The charity stand will be raising money for Combat Stress so bring along your old Acorn hardware and software, and pick up some bargains, all for a good cause. Why not make a long weekend of it and visit some of London’s many attractions while they are less busy than usual? Enter the code ROUGOL on the hotel website for special room rates. https://www.stgileshotels.com/hotels/united-kingdom/london/heathrow The venue is right next to Feltham train and bus station, so is easy to reach by public transport. We look forward to seeing you all in person once again! |

Just updated my show page – I shall be bringing a 4te machine fitted with a switch so that it can boot into either RISC OS or Linux depending on the position of the switch. The switch also acts as a reset button when moved from left (RISC OS) to right (Linux). I shall also have a printed copy of the Impression-X User Manual (but not for sale at the moment). My SatNav unit will be on show – the message protocol between SatNav and RiscOSM has now been published on the RiscOSM web site. |

There is no sign yet of ‘plan B’ appearing over the horizon to scupper the show. Giving it a name like that it almost convinces you that a well reasoned and moderate plan, complete in every detail and criteria for its contingency use are all clearly defined… |
Bryan Hogan (339) 593 posts |
Well as “plan B” seems to be only mandating the use of masks in enclosed spaces, and we will be encouraging that at the show anyway, it shouldn’t make much difference. |

It is just over a week until the return of The RISC OS London Show, back at its usual venue, the St Giles Hotel in Feltham. We will be encouraging the wearing of masks while in the show rooms, unless you have an exemption, for both visitors and exhibitors and there will be hand sanitising stations throughout the venue. This is the first chance in almost two years to chat with developers, hear the latest news, catch up with old friends, and maybe make some new ones :-) Some things to look out for: - Speaking of making new friends, fresh faced Archive editor Gavin Smith will be attending his first show. Do say hello, collect the latest issue hot off the press, or sign up for a subscription. - If you prefer your magazines more virtual, Drag n Drop will have the latest PDF issues and CDs of books for sale. - RISCOSbits will be showing off their range of FOURtress models, plus some major new developments including a Pi4 LapDock and a top secret collaboration project that is of benefit to RISC OS and Linux users. - RISC OS Developments will be on hand to answer questions about the progress on the web browser, new network stack, and other projects. - With the help of Paul Emerton, we will be running a software preservation service – bring your old discs (BBC and Archimedes) and we’ll take an image of it while-u-wait. - Due to ongoing shielding, R-Comp will not be attending the show this year. However they will have a stand with some of their products for you to play with. If the tech works, they may also be giving a theatre talk. - The Midland User Group will be discussing a possible MUG virtual midsummer show next year. - Try out your robotic control skills on the Riscy Robots stand, and the slickest operator wins a robot! - Cameron Cawley will be demonstrating the latest version of graphical adventure game player ScummVM. - In a completely unsurprising move, AMCOG will have yet another new game, The Haunted Tower Hotel, for you to play. - RPCEmu will have demonstrations of a couple of advanced features that are currently being worked on. - The charity stand will be raising money for Combat Stress so bring along your old Acorn hardware and software, and pick up some bargains, all for a good cause. For full exhibitor list see – https://www.riscoslondonshow.co.uk/exhibitors.php Other useful info: - There is a new exit from the train station at the front of platform 1, that leads to a path under the road and up a ramp that comes out next to the hotel, so it is no longer necessary to even cross a road to get to the show :-) - If planning to make a weekend of it and stay in the hotel, use the promo code ROUGOL on the hotel website for discounted rates: - The hotel bar will be open all day to keep you lubricated. - For snacks during the day, there is an excellent new cafe across the road called Porto Madeira, serving hot/cold sandwiches, all day full English breakfast, and Portuguese meals. For more info and the latest news, see the show website – https://www.riscoslondonshow.co.uk/ |

Uh, so why isn’t that plan A? |

Because government wants to protect peoples’ rights to infect others whilst voluntary mask-wearers protect them. They imagine there are more votes in this, and they are probably right, as we mask-wearers will be infected by the others and die out. That eliminates a faction who would vote against the government’s choices. But perhaps this question should really be discussed elsewhere. |

RISC OS Open will be attending. And we’ll be wearing masks! :D |

But we should avoid masking interrupts, well, the interesting ones anyway. |

Good work, small typo: “RPCEmu had a new release out (5.94)” I believe that should read 0.94 |

Shouldn’t Rock Soft be Soft Rock Soft(ware)? I see my game on a few screens – a big thank you to Vince and Tony for doing that. |

Rick/Steve – fixed . Thanks for spotting |

Thanks to everyone who attended the London Show and to those who helped to make it possible at all! It was great to see those who could make it. |

Was mentioned at the show, but for those who haven’t noticed yet – bottom of the page… https://www.riscosopen.org/content/downloads/common Also, the tagline, the bit of the screen nobody ever bothered looking at – Safeguarding the past, present and future of RISC OS for everyone – that’s new, right? 1 Cue a Steve to point out that it’s been like that for months and I hadn’t noticed. ;) |

Our webmaster, who lives in New Zealand, got out of bed at 4am (his time) specifically to change that strapline on the website at the end of our London Show talk. Kudos to Andrew! For those who are interested, I’ve popped a copy of my show talk slides here – although most of the talk isn’t written on the slides! |

Very interesting. The new wallpaper is now on the Titanium. I note the legend on the chip at the bottom right. |
Steve Pampling (1551) 8175 posts |
Part is in bold too, which I think is part of the message. |
Rick Murray (539) 13857 posts |
Aha, so I wasn’t imagining things! As for the wallpaper, it’s like a nerdy Dr Who title (so, the Matt Smith era?). |

The future was touched upon in Steve’s talk and that with the bold text sends a message I think to where ROOL wish the OS to go and to take everyone. Well worth the visit on the day to catch up with all those who could make it so well done and thank you for the show to all involved. |
David Pitt (3386) 1248 posts |
I was not at the show but an interpretation of “for everyone” that comes to mind is the aspiration not to be just a niche OS. RISC OS is mainly a hobby here, but it is fun. ROOL wants more than that. ROOL have successfully kept RISC OS alive but now want it to boldly go …. |
David Pitt (3386) 1248 posts |
And the new wallpaper contains ROOL’s Latin motif ?. |

We have been notified that someone at the London Show tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday, and confirmed by PCR test today. Symptoms first appeared on Monday, so the timing makes it very unlikely that it was contracted at the show, but they may have been infectious. Those known to have had close contact have already been notified and have all tested negative, but other show attendees may wish to take a home lateral flow test just in case. The person affected had been triple vaxxed, so is feeling ok, but isolating at home and bored because they can’t get down to the library to get “real” books! |
