USB devices command

Hi everyone.

I’m about to buy a thermal imaging camera which unfortionaly does not have an SD-card slot. Therfote I will have to use a USB cable to get the images to my disk.

The firm states it will behave as a drive… but I wil test this befor I buy, using the ARMx6. Hoping the ARMx6 has the best USB capability’s.

Using my A9 or RISC-PC (with Unipod-USB podule) I can use a task window with the command USBdevices which results in more info, like vendor and so on.

Is there a way to “push” the USB connectoin on the ARMx6 if it does not work automaticaly? Or is it, either it works or not…

You may find !USBKick helpful.
I run it to wake up a USB keyboard when it does not work after a reboot.

If you want USB information this http://www.xat.nl/riscos/sw/usb/usbinfo.htm is much better than using the *commands.

I have been testing with my Nikon D90. It shows up using !USBinfo and I have tryd !USBKick but the camera does not show his SD-card on the tool bar. (I normally use one of these USB Card readers) If I can get my Nicon to “show” his SD-card via the UDB-cable then I’m hopeful the thermal imaging camera will do the same. Has anyone connected his Photo camera via an USB-cable?

Not all cameras expose their storage to the host in a way that RISC OS will be able to use immediately – for the D90: “As it turns out, the D90 does not show up as a USB mass-storage device, so you won’t see it as a drive that you can copy files directly to/from. It does show up as a PTP (picture transfer protocol) device.”

In which case you can try Dave Higton’s MTP application which works with either MTP or PTP devices.

Dave Higton’s MTP application seems to be the wright program for the job. I can see and copy the images from my D90 to my HD.
I think I have enough working software to try the thermal imaging camera. It will probably be January before I can make an appointment to test the camera, but I will post the result.

To all, who have been helping me out or following this post, about how to read the internal memory of a Testo thermal camera.

I have been to the Testo firm in Brussels, www.testo.com and tried to “enter” the internal memory of the “Testo 856”, but no luck. Although I was told that the camera was accessible as a memory drive, it did not work. As soon as I connected the camera to the USB port, my ARMx6 desktop blocked as if the camera was constantly sending commands to start the “free down-loadable” windows program which of course it cold not find. I still was able to move the pointer on my desktop but cold not drag a window. As soon as I disconnect the camera, the computer seem to have remembered which window I have tried to move and the window jumped to the new position by its selves. Clearly the camera was constantly sending interrupts. Therefore, I was not able to try any of the software suggested by many of you. Thanks for the effort guys!

A camera which is specifically made to work only with a Windows program is not for me, so I wend home with all my money still in my pocket… It takes special effort to make a camera that incompatible…

Not so much effort into making something incompatible, more like effort into making it work well on the target system (and if it breaks on everything else, too bad).

I wonder if it was expecting some sort of acknowledgement? That Windows might reply on a way that RISC OS does not?
I wonder how it would have behaved with, say, Linux.

Will never know. If I ever buy a thermal imaging camera, it will be one with a removable Micro-SD card.

I’ve got a Hti HT-A1 thermal camera, recognised as USB storage device by Linux, and works OK. Tried it on the mini.m via a USB2 hub, it recognises it as mass storage, but doesn’t display a drive icon. When directly connected to Pi 4B, it just stiffs the machine, mouse moves but nothing else. :(

Yes!!! I’v bought a Voltcraft WBM-460 it’s a multivolt meter with a IR camera on board. And yes it has a MicroSD slot to save and record images an messuring data. 363 euro Ex VAT in promotion. Bought it on the webschop of Conrad electronic.
