The next meeting of the RISC OS User Group Of London is: Recoding the Classics, presented by Jeroen Vermeulen Monday 17th January 2022, 7.45pm The Duke of Sussex (upstairs in the Petworth Room from 6.30pm) Also online via Zoom from 7.30pm https://rougol.jellybaby.net/meetings/ Over the past 18 months Jeroen Vermeulen has ported the five games from the Raspberry Pi book Coding the Classics across to RISC OS. By using the original sound and graphics resources produced for the book he has been able to produce very highly polished games in a short space of time. Jeroen will be joining us via Zoom to tell us how and why these ports were produced. For the first two games the Python/Pygame code used in the book was converted into BBC BASIC with the help of the AMCOG Development Kit. Jeroen will talk about how this was achieved and some of the issues/compromises that had to be made. After Python3 and Pygame were ported to RISC OS by Chris Johns, the original code from the book could be used for the other games. However there was still some porting work to do due to the differences in OS environment, and Jeroen will go through the changes needed (this section should be helpful to anyone trying to run Python code from other platforms). There will also be a look at how to setup all the components needed to get Python3/Pygame working on RISC OS and some comparisons of the performance between the BASIC/Python and RISC OS/Linux versions of the games. All Jeroen’s ports are available on PlingStore, and hopefully by the end of the talk you will be encouraged to not only give the games a play, but maybe also be inspired to try writing/porting some games of your own! This meeting will also be held online via Zoom (but do join us in the pub if you can!). Please contact us to receive a link to the meeting. If you have attended any previous meeting, it’s the same link. |

Neat. I started converting one to C over Christmas a year ago, but then forgot all about it when I went back to work! |

Remember the Northern Line Bank branch is closed from 15 January so no service between Moorgate and Kennington (until mid May). Use Jubilee Line instead… |

Yes, but ROUGOL meets at Waterloo, which is on the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line, and now has an increased service :-) |

D’oh. Glad you replied, I had forgotten your move. I’ll bring a couple (more if people let me know by 1100 on Monday) of Impression User Manuals for sale on the day – £25 each, i.e. postage free, normal price £29 including UK P&P – and a personal download link for the Impression Publisher software, based on 5.13, comes free with the printed manual, courtesy of RISC OS Developments. I’ll need to leave the meeting by 2200 to catch my train from Paddington. |

Venue and travel details here, showing how close to Waterloo station the pub is, and I’ve also added more info for those driving (parking bays directly outside on Coral St) – Anyone arriving early to avoid the (rather subdued at the moment) rush hour, can pop into the park next door to see the wonderful display of lion sculptures – https://londonist.com/london/things-to-do/born-free-lion-sculptures-waterloo-millennium-park |

And for added confusion, the pub have put us back in the bigger Chichester Room! Now I just need 15 people to join me to fill it… |
