PipeDream 3 Resurrection

Don’t like toolbars? Want applications that take up less memory? PipeDream 4 doesn’t work on your ancient RISC OS 2 system? I have recently unearthed PipeDream 3.10 from May 1990… PipeDream 3.10a There’s a ‘modern’ 32-bit build (using DDE30d) and a ‘classic’ 26-bit build (largely using C Release 3.1B) – both from the same source :-). If you feel inclined to peruse it, the source is there in Git. Head on over to https://sourceforge.net/projects/coltonsoftwarepipedream/ where you can also find more archaic artifacts to use with emulators or stone-age systems. Why not the ultimate, PD 3.14? Well, I don’t have that source! I think that the only differences from 3.10 were that we added German and Swedish translations and changed the Spell module to allow creation of non-English dictionaries. |

It’s a fair cop, but society’s to blame… http://www.croftnuisk.co.uk/coltsoft-downloads/pipedream/PipeDream3/PipeDream3_3_10_1.zip http://www.croftnuisk.co.uk/coltsoft-downloads/pipedream/PipeDream3/PipeDream3-26_3_10_1.zip (26-bit) I’ve put links to them and a note in the usual place: https://croftnuisk.co.uk/coltsoft/pipedream/downloads/ |

That’s the perfect time to ask the 1 million £ question: what’s the difference between PipeDream and Fireworkz? |
Stuart Swales (8827) 1357 posts |
One ‘workz’ in a nice way, t’other less so! [Edit: PipeDream 4 still clearly shows its character-oriented roots, whereas Fireworkz was designed to use proportional fonts and a GUI from the get-go. PipeDream users are hard folk to persuade to use Fireworkz…. We also have Fireworkz for Windows, but not PipeDream 3 or 4 for Windows!]

For those disinclined to peruse SourceForge due to its earlier bad reputation, I have moved over to using GitHub for much of this. https://github.com/skswales/colton-software-pipedream3 Also for your delectation, there are: https://github.com/skswales/colton-software-pipedream4 https://github.com/skswales/colton-software-fireworkz Sources and binary releases. All the other stone-age stuff like PipeDream 2, Z88 filing system etc. is still available on SourceForge as it doesn’t fit into GitHub’s way of working that well (or so it seems to me). |

I should have the original discs of Pipedream 3, German version, somewhere. Will it still be readable? Probably, I had mostly luck with DD floppies. |

I do have PipeDream 3 German version, including the manual and floppy, here. The DD floppies that we used do seem very good, data retension wise. I did add the German and Swedish PipeDream 3 up on https://sourceforge.net/projects/coltonsoftwarepipedream/files/PipeDream3/Historic/ I recall we got a bit of stick at the time from native German speakers as we commissioned a Swiss-German lady to do the translation of the manual and it didn’t quite read right esp. if you were from the north. She assured us it was useless to spell-check the work due to compound nouns, technical terms etc. but I converted the manual to plain text, built a dictionary in PipeDream from just the words found therein and scrolled down through that, manually verifying all the words using just my O-level German and a big physical dictionary. I think that German PipeDream 3 was also sold by Acorn as part of an A3020 bundle? |
