London Show 2022 cancelled

ROUGOL are sad to announce that this year’s London show is cancelled :-( With the usual venue currently closed, we have been unable to find an available replacement within our budget. We hope to return next year. In the meantime, support your local user group (including ROUGOL of course!) by attending the meetings, or maybe even volunteering to give a presentation. |

Sad but understandable |

Venues for events are always difficult, while CAMRA are not the only not for profit organisation who search out suitable venues for events they do have a nice list of contacts you could speak to about possible venues. |

Could some sort of virtual show, as we had in lockdown, be staged as an alternative? |

I’ve been asked by a few people about having a virtual show, and the simple answer is – I won’t be doing one! However if anyone else wants to organise something, then I am happy to put details on the show website and setup the ROUGOL Zoom account. If you are interested, drop me an email – https://www.riscoslondonshow.co.uk/contact.php |

Firstly it is sad that the London show has been cancelled and I am sure that ROUGOL would not have taken the decision to do so lightly as it is one of the mainstays of the RISC OS calender for both end users and exhibitors. Having recently run a Virtual show we at MUG know how much time and effort it is to set up and co-ordinate both for the organisers as well as those who virtually exhibt. If anything it is a lot more work, in our view, than an in person show. We look forward to the show returning next year and as stated in the meantime support the user groups who are also part of our community by attending either in person or virtually where that is offered. Also don’t forget those who support and sustain our market by offering the products and services that help make our platform so unique. Why not think about still using the money you save on not attending the show on something new or upgrade your hardware/software. |

Wanting to end (?) this thread with a bit of happier news, I can confirm that after a couple of years away (thanks COVID), Richard and I are going ahead with the SW Show in Bristol on Sat 25th Feb 2023. It will be at the same venue as before – Arnos Manor Hotel – which is not far from the train station, and has good parking facilities. With no London show, we’re doing our best to take things up a gear and make this show a suitable replacement. The venue is nice, and we have plenty of space booked for the already-confirmed exhibitors. But we could always use MORE! If you have any RISC OS related projects you’d like to share with people, or perhaps you have written pd/freeware programs or ported/re-compiled programs from other platforms – why not join in and have a table? You’ll get to be part of the pre/post show camaraderie if you’d like, and you’ll have somewhere to sit down and call your own at the show. Please get in touch with either Richard or myself – you will probably be surprised at how affordable it is for non-commercial folks to attend. Another aspect we’d like to encourage would be anyone who feels like they are familiar with major applications (eg. Impression, Ovation Pro, Artworks, PhotoDesk, Techwriter, DataPower etc) as visitors may well be interested in seeing and discussing programs being used. I recall seeing artists demoing Artworks and PhotoDesk at past shows and being blown away by what they could do – it was really inspiring. If you feel you know any programs well, again, please drop us a line. |

Meh. London’s overrated anyway. ;) It’s been forever since I’ve been to Bristol, mind you (lived in Bridgwater for about a year in the earlyish 90s). |

@ Andrew
I have actually plenty, and it’s probably a good idea to show people how to use code testing suties ported to RISC OS (given the latest discussions I have seen around here) and how to break down code to be “test-able” (althought if this is a bit of a complex topic, but maybe showing how to use the libs and answering questions may help) as well as showing all then next Themes and components for the DME effort. If this stuff is of interest I’ll send you an email for the details. |

Given Andrew’s announcement up-thread, this is probably not too unreasonable a place to suggest that if anyone would like to have a day out in Bradford1 in 2023, then they might wish to set aside Saturday 22nd April for it in their diary. I’m sure that there will be a proper announcement along soon, once all of the ducks have been lined up neatly by the organising team. 1 Not Wakefield. |

I might just do that, for old times sake as well as the show – lived there 1972-83. If I do, it’ll pretty certainly be the first time south of the border since January this year. |

Is there any chance of a show in the West Midlands? |
Andrew Rawnsley (492) 1445 posts |
Hi Tennant! Perhaps you can hitch a ride with one of the other MUG members in Feb? Several of them have (historically) made the trip down, and may be able to help you out. |

I went to this one before COVID as it’s my local show. The Webbington (previous location) was a lovely venue but very hard to get to by train (get off at Weston and then use the free shuttle bus). As I live north of Bristol it’s much easier to get to the new venue, whether by train or by car. Only problem is, as per usual, the SW show clashes with the Bristol Sound & Vision show. Having said that the S&V runs for 3 days over that weekend so doing both is quite feasable. |
