Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club Meeting on Wednesday 1st May at 7.45pm Gerph on GamesCharles Ferguson, aka Gerph, will talk about the games that he’s worked on – the Doom work that he did back when he was at university, that later became the enhanced version of Doom+, then Heretic and Hexen… and then jump to the current day and the recent work on the games that have been re-issued. He’ll mostly talk about some of the challenges in the games and some of the things he found fun. There may be some demos, but the games get choppy whilst on video so we’ll see if that works. This ‘virtual’ meeting is open to all, and will take place using the Zoom conferencing service using our regular meeting credentials. Zoom invitations will be sent out ahead of the meeting, but only to those who email info2024@wrocc.org.uk to request one. If you would like to be part of the meeting (and don’t already have the link from a previous meeting or receive an invite in the next 24 hours as a member of WROCC), please RSVP — at the latest by the end of Tuesday 30th April (GMT). If you haven’t used Zoom before, we suggest that before Wednesday you try to join the Zoom test meeting at https://zoom.us/test on the device that you intend to use, in order to check that your system works OK. You will not require a Zoom account to take part. Come along, and ask questions about the games if you like :-) In tests, the games were a little choppy but seemed stable enough over the video to be watchable, so I’ll be doing some demos with them as well. For those who can’t attend, there will be slides and resources available after the meeting as well. |

Thanks! I’ll be sat behind a sound desk in a theatre this evening, and can’t really manage to be in two places at the same time, even if one of them is virtual… |

The slides for the presentation can be found on my presentations website: https://presentation.riscos.online/doom-games/index.html There are also a bunch of resources from the development – screen shots and pictures of the games as they were being worked on. |

After the presentation, during the demo of the experimental Doom+, I demonstrated the Anaglyph variant of the game. This allows you to wear the red-cyan glasses and be able to play the game with a more 3D look to everything. It’s still experimental and lacks in some significant ways, but it works well enough to be playable. Someone requested a video of the anaglyph 3D game so that they could see it with the glasses at a later point. I’ve now created that video, and you can find it on my Presentations site . It is in the Doom games presentation, within the media resources, under the Doom+ media at the bottom of the page. Quick link: https://presentation.riscos.online/doom-games/media.html#doomplus |

The WROCC presentation video about Doom Games has appeared on YouTube now – many thanks to them once again. You can find it linked from my presentation site – https://presentation.riscos.online/doom-games/index.html – and in the YouTube videos channel for WROCC, at https://www.youtube.com/@wrocc-riscos. See me stumble over words now and then, and forget how to play Doom :-) |
