I’m so confused…it says its a KVM but also says 2GHz CPU? |

I think it’s a laptop and docking station, so the KVM will be the docking station part and the CPU will be the laptop part, I guess. |

Here’s the TL:DR version… RiscDOCK is a “lapdock” which is effectively a laptop but without the brain (not unlike the old Atrix things, only more up to date and much more flexible). With different hardware modules that can be connected to the lapdock via a docking cradle, it can be a RISC OS laptop, a Linux laptop, and even a Windows laptop. Computers that don’t fit in the cradles can also be used by attaching appropriate cables, so a whole range of boards and operating systems can be attached to the lapdock part. It has several distinct advantages over a standard laptop – the main one being that it can run pretty much ANY operating system: RISC OS, Linux, MAC OS, iOS, Android, and Windows have all been proved to work. We provide it with a RISC OS system to start with, but have a Linux module available as an option. When “undocked” from the lapdock element, the hardware modules can function as a normal desktop system. So, one hardware module can be both a desktop computer and a laptop! It also has KVM functionality, allowing you to switch between the currently docked hardware module and a connected smartphone by pressing a key. Ideal for setting up your mobile hotspot (so you can connect RISC OS to the internet using WiFi), quick web browsing, checking emails, reading texts/messages and other smartphone tasks. The lapdock battery can also be used to add a bit of juice to the smartphone battery. |

Thanks for the clarification. Just this part: When “undocked” from the lapdock element, the hardware modules can function as a normal desktop system. So, one hardware module can be both a desktop computer and a laptop! — So if I want to just ignore the laptop and use the dock to run RiscOS itself connecting it to a logitech USB wireless receiver that allow to me to use my keyboard, mouse and monitor like a KVM is that possible? — Also Can I buy just the dock instead of the laptop? Thank you |

Hi Robin, I’m not sure I understand your first question. You could connect the module to Logitech connector plus a monitor and it would become a ‘desktop computer’ – the KVM element is built into the laptop part. And you COULD buy just the dock and not the laptop, but that would just be buying a standard RISC OS computer. Fill in the contact form on the webpage or drop me a line at info@[my_user_name].co.uk and I’ll send you more details. |

I read the announcement but it was missing some key information such as how the external machine attaches (HDMI/USB cables or hard dock) and doesn’t mention what model of (I presume) Pi it comes bundled with – but did mention a Pi5, which added further confusion as a Pi5 can’t run RISC OS. I was also a bit confused by the use of the term “laptop” as I’m not sure how feasible it would be to use on your lap with something attached to the side, as shown in the “artist’s impression” – which gives the impression it would only be usable on a desk. That said, my pi-top could do with replacing so if I can use it on my the lap like I do that, it might make a good replacement? |

The extras section mentions the ability to purchase extra docking cradles so I assume it is something the “modules” slot in to to offer stability and protection? |
