Otter Browser and QupZilla - Javascript JIT enabled

I haven’t tried BBC Weather myself, but it sounds like a bug. Otter and QupZilla (as well as NetSurf) all have CSS enabled by default. |

I think you’re right: I’d assumed CSS must be enabled because all the other sites I access render perfectly. It’s not a problem, just irritating; my main reason for airing it was in case it illuminated some general issue. |

Sometimes with Netsurf if the download is slow for some reason the css file does not download and display. So could that be the reason? |

The problem is caused by a bug in the content blocker. A quick work around is to disable it. See further up the topic. There’s an updated version available here which may help. This version still seems to have problems with content blocking turned on but does contain a bug fix for a problem with content blocking. |

That’s odd; I had disabled it (or rather, never enabled it – Tools-Content Blocking has always been unticked throughout (i.e., all languages). Configuration Manager shows (under Content Blocking): ‘EnableWildCards’, ‘bool’ and ‘no’, and I haven’t touched these settings since installing. But I will give the updated version a go and report back. |

Does Otter work with Google groups? |

Tried the latest (0.9.11 dev-20160714) version – no difference; BBC Weather/Sport still fails to render correctly. |

There’s an updated version of otter browser available here. Hopefully it fixes the problem of the BBC website not rendering correctly. |

Just installed the latest version (20160828) manually by dragging it over the existing installation in Apps-Network. Works nicely (feels nippier than earlier versions) but no change to the BBC website problem. It’s not major, so I’ll just live with it. |

There’s another updated version of Otter Browser available here. |

Thanks for this latest version, Chris. However I still can’t login to Coop bank since they made their website ‘simpler and easier’ for the user, and we all know what that really means. :-(( Before they changed the website, Netsurf was adequate with or without Javascript enabled. |

David: Have you tried their mobile site? |
George T. Greenfield (154) 748 posts |
Thanks for the update, Chris: good to know you’re sparing the time to improve !Otter, which has been for some months now my default browser. The latest iteration seems nippier (though that could be partly affected by a recent broadband upgrade from BT Infinity 1 to Infinity 2). If you can be bothered, it would be nice to know what has changed in the latest version. |

@Chris Evans Of course, this bank is now a travesty of a co-operative, but that’s another matter. Perhaps they paid Oracle a vast some of money to make their website difficult, like Co-op Energy. |

I’m having problems getting either of these browsers to work on a Pi3, both lock the machine, no app window shows and no icons in the iconbar, just an instant lockup. I’ve merged !Boot, installed the packages from the 1st post on this thread via PackMan and ensured !UnixFC and !UnixFont are looked at. Do I need to do anything extra for Pi3 compatibility? |
Chris Gransden (337) 1202 posts |
The version in this topic has the javascript JIT enabled which has been built with VFP enabled. The version in PackMan is built without VFP enabled so is only the Javascript interpreter version. It also has the incompatible UnixLib version. |

Just a suggestion, but why not script an IFNotExist that checks for a previous install and then prompts to ask about using a RAM disk to speed up the install? |
Chris Evans (457) 1614 posts |
I can’t quantify ‘a long time’, but as it can take up to 40 seconds1 to load without creating the font cache files, you need to wait at least 2 minutes before considering it might have crashed. 1 12 seconds normally on my RapidO Ig |

There’s another updated version of Otter Browser available here. There are no RISC OS specific changes. It’s just an update to the latest development version. One thing you may notice if using RISC OS roms built from today onwards (14/12/16) is that the Javascript engine seems more responsive. At least on Titanium and RPi 3. While still slow it doesn’t seem to pause as much. |

Old question – is there a up to date version – that would work with the Emulator/Iyonix? Thanks |
George T. Greenfield (154) 748 posts |
This is the 0.9.12-dev 20161214 version. I’m not sure the speed/responsiveness improvements (which are very noticeable) are down to changes in the ROM, as I’m using a high-vector version dating from last July on my Pi2: presumably therefore the improvements are ‘under the hood’ to Otter itself. But anyone still using an earlier version would be well advised to upgrade IMHO – the latest version is significantly more useable. |

It would be handy to have a browseable website with the versions of Otter and Qupzilla that are available. Has anyone tested it on a Pi Zero? |

Very pleased to have a browser to do my banking without using VNC and Linux! A curiosity: Trying to log in to MoonPig, the entry boxes won’t accept any text at all. I am using the latest development ROM image if that’s relevant. |

Check if you’ve got javascript enabled, either for the site (right-click, Website Preferences-Scripting) or overall (Tools-Preferences-Advanced-Content). |
John Williams (567) 768 posts |
I have in both places – my network index page also tells me I have – a little addition I made to it some time ago, mainly for NetSurf! Thaanks for the response, though! |
