This is to let people know about the release of the !WAV_NoiseShaping application. This can generate 16bit Wave files from 24bit versions. The result is a file that can deliver more resolution when played using the standard RO sound system. When FLACed, the Noise Shaped files will also require less storage space. The application – inc source code and help – is available from http://www.audiomisc.co.uk/software/index.html Noise Shaping allows the 16bit file to preserve more detail and have a lower audible noise level than possible for truncated/dithered 16bit. The process is particularly useful for playing 96k/88.2k sample rate files. You can see an example of the improvement in dyanamic range from the test results shown here http://jcgl.orpheusweb.co.uk/temp/shaped.png So if you wish to play 96k/24 material using a modern RO machine you may well find the Noise Shaped version give better results.
