I hope to release some software at the South West show to generate a family tree from a simple database structure based on directories and sub-directories. It allows a relationship structure such as that below: to be read in and presented as a graphical family tree display such as that given below, each box representing a directory with offspring in subdirectories. It allows the boxes to be moved around to optimise use of space with other affected boxes moving interactively. |

Hopefully I shall be able to release this once I get an allocation from ROOL. I now have an allocation of app name, filetype and draw tag so I have got version 1.12 in beta testing: Edit:just need to get OLE Edit: is now working so that a draw graphic in Impression can be edited (in !FamTree) by CTRL-double clicking it. Hoping to release it at the South West show. It is described here Edit: The ability to import ‘GEDCOM’ files has now been added and is undergoing beta testing. |

Every so often I check what Google translate can do and, amazingly, in this instance it isn’t that bad. |

There’s now only a few weeks to go before the SW Show, so I thought I’d just give this thread a “bump” to remind people that the event is coming up. We have a broad range of RISC OS companies exhibiting, just shy of our record-breaking event last year. This will be the 20th anniversary for the SW Show, so expect CAKE for all attendees! Exhibitors include… R-Comp / RCI As usual, many of us will be meeting up the night before for dinner and conversation, as well as taking over the more comfortable areas of the hotel (eg. sofas!) for lots of RISC OS related chatter! Dinner/bed/breakfast deals are available – please contact Richard (Orpheus) or myself for more info. A number of developers are planning new releases at the show – the above thread shows Chris Hall’s new program, and I can say that we’ll have new versions of several programs as well as updates and new releases for our ARMX6 and TiMachine computers. The SW Show is often considered one of the friendliest events because many visitors and exhibitors stay in the hotel, which has a lot of character. So, why not come and join the fun with all of us? The show takes place at the Webbington Hotel as usual – for more info please see http://www.riscos-swshow.co.uk/ |

I hope they open-source the recipe so that those of us on the other side of the world can still enjoy it! |

Hey, we might even offer free admittance if you’ve come all THAT way for cake! :) Fingers crossed Vince or Mark will have photos up after the show, for virtual feasting! |

Good point. I noted that it was the twentieth show, which would normally mean the 19th anniversary of the first – but there was no show in (I think) 2000, so it works out as a double twentieth; twentieth anniversary, and twentieth show. As for photos? It’ll help if I remember to bring my camera this time! Ahem. Those and a show report will probably not appear for at least a month, though – because I’ll need a break to recover from a holiday and two shows, all in the space of two weeks. =:o |

While that (and David’s comment it was in reply to) may have been slightly tongue in cheek, in all seriousness if David did manage to get to the show, I would very definitely shout him a pint or two – it’s the least he deserves for some of the things he’s done with RISC OS FR. Rick is also someone I’d line up a couple of pints for if he was able to get here. I know we do have Martin who travels quite a way – |

Sadly it’s been a quarter century since I lived in Bridgewater… But hey, if you ever plan to hold a show in Louvigne-de-Bais (where that Playmobil Expo is held), I’m totally there. ;-) You know, in some alternative universe… (^_^) |

I said:
It turns out there was a show in 2000 – on Saturday, 19th February. My comment above was based on some digging around I did when I wrote the 2016 show report (see the very bottom). I spent ages looking for the dates of the shows, but couldn’t find one for 2000 – and knowing that someone had previously told me there was a year it didn’t take place, added two and two together, threw in some confirmation bias, and concluded that was the year. Obviously it wasn’t – and that makes 21 shows. However, this does leave me wondering why I was told there was a non-show year – was there perhaps a year when the show was planned and booked, but for some reason (the weather, perhaps) didn’t go ahead? (I wish I could remember who it was that told me – I could go back to them and ask!) |

Free admittance, cake, beer: it’s hard to resist. Unfortunately I’ll be at an anniversary the same day… and not in UK :) |

Maybe what happened with the missing show is like the Australian Open, which has held a tennis tournament at yearly intervals since 1969 – and yet there wasn’t a 1986 Open! The solution to this conundrum is that they changed their date from December to January, so they had to skip 1986 else it would’ve started a few weeks after the previous one. |

Only a few days to go – SW Show this weekend! We’ve had more confirmed exhibitors too including Sine Nomine software (authors of popular mapping software RiscOSM and more). |

Yes, I’ll be showing off the new contour pack for western Europe, which adds contour data from NASA (and Ordnance Survey for Great Britain) to your map data. It has been a while since we made the trip down from Durham to the south-west show, so I am looking forward to meeting people. |

Hope your house renovation goes well Chris – we’ll certainly miss you guys. It’s a shame you won’t be there because thanks to several new exhibitors, this is now our largest number for SW show in the last 5+ years. Just hope the weather holds up so that there are plenty of visitors too :) Plus, you’ll miss out on THE CAKE! If there’s any left over, and there’s anyone heading back Worthing-way, maybe we can send you some :) |

Unfortunately, CashBook 1.40 has proved a bit elusive – not least because recently I’ve been touring a theatre production around Europe in my spare time, instead of writing RISC OS software… However, I will have a copy of the latest test build1 of CashBook on hand to show the new reporting functionality (table grids, page preview, and more), and users are free to download it from my website and have a play themselves. I’ll have CDs of all of my software available to buy for £5, which will once again be going to the British Heart Foundation, and copies of the latest WROCC Back Catalogue for £10 (the 2017 edition, despite what the website says), which will be going to WROCC. 1 Or perhaps even something newer than the latest test build. |

Thanks for the links. I spy a cake… and it’s not cog-shaped. Disappointed.
So it does still exist! I was looking for information on this recently and the only link I could find – riscosdev.com – goes to a generic page. |

ISTR reading in this thread that there are YouTube videos of three talks at the show. Has that post and/or the videos been deleted? |
Vince M Hudd (116) 534 posts |
The talks were recorded, but I haven’t even looked at them yet, let alone got them ready to upload. |
