Running RPCEmu from flash memory

I bought one of the USB stick RPCEmu packages. I installed it on my Toshiba Portege with XP and it runs at quite an acceptable speed from disc. It does not run in full-screen, despite defining a new mode to match the 1280×800 size, but that is not really a problem. I thought, from various comments, that it should run from a flash stick, and indeed it does, but the speed is really unacceptably slow. I have tried a variety of sticks and there is some noticeable variation, but the only real difference was running it from an SD card, but that was still too slow for me. It runs OK from an external USB harddrive. Can someone recommend a USB flash stick that is known to be fast and suitable for RPCEmu? |

For ‘fast’ USB sticks, often you want low latency rather than MB/s especially if you’re accessing lots of small files (eg RISC OS Boot sequence). I recommend picking a stick that says it supports ReadyBoost, because that means the access time is <1ms. But watch the MB/s speed too – sometimes ReadyBoost sticks still have poor read/write speeds. |

It seems an interesting program, perhaps you could publish details of the RISC OS version. Or do we have to email sales@xflip.com to find this out? |

You’ll be lucky…
I say we all (those of us with spamtrap email addresses) do exactly this. I’m game if you are… ;-) |

You think I haven’t already? Done before I posted here. :) |

Oh FFS, can someone ban the spammer? |
Kevin (224) 322 posts |
Why not charge them an advertising fee? |
Eric Rucker (325) 232 posts |
I’ve been on forums that did that. End result, the whole forum turns into a spammy mess, because the advertisers feel like they have special rights due to paying to advertise. |

I was thinking along the lines off this spam has been on here for x number of days, so much per day before it was deleted. |

Probably a case of nulla poena sine lege |

What happened to the moderators that were recruited a while back? It still says that the forums are unmoderated. This spammer posted a while back and (I’m guessing) was banned, presumably by deleting their account. Surely it wouldn’t take too much to ban their IP and the user name (which is IIRC the same one that they used before). |

The question needs modification: The original implies no action on the part of existing moderators. |

I know a number of people offered to act as moderators, but I don’t recall any response from ROOL. They were very busy getting the RISC OS on Raspberry Pi launched. They also have been fighting with the less than brilliant Forum software and website, oh and dealing with a significant spurt of Orders to the shop. So no surprise that some issues haven’t been addressed yet. These things all take time, which is in short supply! |

There was no response from ROOL because our webmaster has just moved to New Zealand so he’s got a little bit of other stuff on his hands, besides changing the forum software to allow us to have a group of nominated external moderators. We’d love to add this at some point, but don’t hold your breath (for anything relating to our web site). |

Isn’t that a bit extreme? Moderation in all things ;-) |

Could have been worse, could have gone to Liverp<cough>other places… At least New Zealand has funny accents, the odd earthquake, and astonishing scenery. Plus, they speak English. And given the Dotcom mess, they might even remember that American law doesn’t necessarily apply in their country. ;-) |

The last person who tried that joke in my presence eventually woke up and now looks much like he used to from most angles. Do try to stop being such an arse. |

Guess I touched a nerve, huh? Though, is the suggestion of violence a way to make any point at all?
I do try, every day. Not sure I’m successful, though. :-) BTW: Feel free to say what you like about Aldershot. Unless it has radically changed in the last decade, I knew the place for some 20 years and it just kept going downhill… I’m trying to think of positive attributes and all I can come up with is this weird shop that sold second-hand electrical stuff opposite the Burger King and down the road (towards Guildford) a ways. I bought a copy of the Arthur PRMs there. That’s not exactly a highlight of a town though, is it? Aldershot sure ain’t Farnham! I really don’t get why they built that big extension onto the mini-mall, given the difficulty of finding anybody to go into it; at least the new mall in Fleet sort of had some shops in it! |

How? |

Possibly a topic for an “off-topic” section? Are you local to the area then? Okay, I’ll go listen to some ’80s music and complete the nostalgia kick. :-) |
