An Aldershotian asked
That was a joke. Calling you an arse was a deliberate insult. I was hoping for some disagreement so I could compare consciously denigrating one person with the casual mockery of half a million people. However, I suspect my point would be lost however forcefully put. I’m tired of the lazy parroting of patronising cliché and what would amount to racism or sexism if levelled at a demographic rather than geographically specified people, especially when the lies and contempt are accepted without thought and hence continue to tarnish what is, in many ways, Britain’s second city. I was struck by what the Prime Minister said in response to the Hillsborough revelations, “Yes, the Sun printed lies. But a significant proportion of the country went along with them”. I think that says it all. |

You want to hear the comments I sometimes get about choosing to go live among “the French”, including the very tired “cheese-eating surrender monkeys” showing that the best insult the person can throw around is a Homer Simpson quote demonstrating a woeful ignorance of history (hello, anybody heard of Napolean!?). Did you hear the one about the Englishman, Scotsman, and Irishman…? Blah blah blah – insert lame joke here. I think in contemporary culture it is quite frequent to mock entire cities / regions / countries, but it is something entirely different to mock an individual or a demographic – not to mention demonstrating the lunacy of judging a person’s level of intelligence by their hair colour and other such nonsense. Oh, and for what it is worth, I’m not Aldershotian by origin. I was born in Glasgow ( ! ), but my mother got a transfer “down south” when I was a few months old… |

Firstly, that’s pretty much the M.O. of the gutter press, isn’t it? Insult now, print a tiny retraction on page 66 if somebody notices… Secondly, the PM is stupid enough to blame the people for believing stuff printed in newspapers? I bet he’d have a different opinion if press activism helped win him an election or referendum… |
