Error number &81F403

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong here but I’ve just tried installing RPCEmu on a new Debian install and it wont start. I keep getting:

Error type *Desktop to start TaskManager (Error number &81F403).

I have tried building several different versions of RPCEmu and am using the “riscos520” ROM from RISC OS Open but they all exhibit the same behaviour—I suspect that I’m missing something really obvious but after looking around the Internet I could not find any useful information.

Try:

*Configure FileSystem HostFS

I get:

Filing system HostFS: not present (Error number &F8)

But I do have a populated “hostfs” folder next to the rpcemu executable…should the hostfs folder be located elsewhere?

Try EmuFS instead…

I get:

Filing system EmuFS: not present (Error number &F8)

Maybe I should recompile it with debugging enabled…?

Have you got the poduleroms directory set up correctly? The pre-built HostFS modules are in the riscos-progs directory of the source distribution, they need placing in a poduleroms folder so that RPCEmu will load them.

Error type *Desktop to start TaskManager (Error number &81F403).

It’s just a CMOS thing. In the default CMOS the configured language is 10 which is the TaskManager now.

On Ubuntu 16.04 the start up is to a command line prompt :-

Error: Type *Desktop to start TaskManager (Error number &81F403)
*

Doing just that starts the Desktop. Then the CMOS can be sorted in a Task Window, in particular configuring FileSystem for use after !Boot is installed in HostFS.

EmuFS is long gone.

I came across this: “This new FS is called EmuFS. It works internally as the previous filesystem HostFS but it has more advantages like multiple disc support, free support, multiple language support and a better disk filer.”

The curse of outdated documentation, especially that being read by somebody who doesn’t use RPCEmu! (I’ve a Pi so why emulate?)

I have some of those too (actually a PiSSD as my main computer and a B+ for testing things) and certainly use them when I’m at home but I haven’t yet got enough pennies to get a PiTop (or equivalent) so when I’m tinkering away from home I want to use RPCEmu…

Back on topic though—I recompiled from scratch and it appears to be working fine again so not sure what I’d been doing wrong. Going to chalk this one up to Gremlins…
