Keyboard 'key up' occasionally lost

WiFi would be good – but I’m aware there’s a couple of hundred cheapo devices out there, all subtely different. Plus the standards (with my new Livebox, my phone prompted me for WPS – the hell is that?), anyway…
…is this more a “possible maybe in a while” or a “not a hope in hell”?

WPS = WiFi Protected Setup. Wikipedia has a page.

WiFi via an external box, connected by Ethernet, has been possible for years, though you’ll need Firefox or a similar browser to configure any of the available boxes.

WiFi via a USB dongle is possible, but don’t hold your breath. If I understand correctly, some work has already been done, but abandoned at least temporarily because it doesn’t work.

I’m beginning to think the problem is down to my mouse, it’s an optical wired Microsoft mouse. I still got issues if I plugged my mouse into the pi and the keyboard and usb stick into the powered hub, and I’ve tried with different keyboards to no effect.
Here’s hoping it’s the mouse that’s drawing the power.
It would be useful to have some way of easily displaying the USB power levels (and other levels if possible) on RISC OS. I have no idea if it is possible or not, but if these issues are power related – and they seem to be, then this is going to be a nightmare for many users if it’s not easily diagnosed.
Sticking keyboards don’t scream power issues normally.
For the moment it seems to be OK for me again….here’s hoping!

Producing an app that will total up the claimed power rating of the attached USB devices should be easy enough. But for actual power usage measurements, we’d need access to whatever power/voltage monitoring logic is in the SoC – assuming there is some, of course!

I think !USBInfo does this, but I can’t quite remember and can’t check at the moment.

I can see my USB stick uses 500mA of power, I figured it would – which is why I got my powered HUB.
Pi USB ports are using 100mA of power, so at least I know I should be OK.
Next thing to sort out is to make sure the power adapter is OK. Im using my nokia charger at the moment, I bought a 1000mA charger – but it won’t even charge my phone, and my phone charger is 600mA – so it’s clearly nowhere near 600mA nevermind 1000mA.
I seem to remember the minimum was 400mA for a Pi, so I maybe close to the edge as now I have sound, ethernet and both USB ports being used, my usb ports are using 100mA each.

Maplins do a 2.1A usb “charger” with the gimme now option, so should have that in the next 2 hours :-D

I have a flatbed scanner that takes 500mA, and as it is the power limit on standard USB, I can imagine those little harddiscs are rated similarly. I would imagine your USB key just spits out generic data instead of something useful. My USB device takes, I think, 64mA (which makes more sense for a controller and flash)…

Yeah I was shocked it took 500mA too, so possibly it’s just a generic number.
But the mouse takes 100mA according to the data on the mouse , so it’s not impossible that the usb stick takes over 140mA.
Anyway I’ve now got my 2.1A power supply for the Pi, so I’m definately not going to suffer any power issues with my current setup.
If HDForm worked on 1TB discs I’d partition one or two 250Gb Filecore discs on my USB external disc, so at the moment I’m stuck with my wonderful USB stick.

Since adding the new power supply I’ve not had the mouse/keyboard jamming. Also I’ve had no nasty errors when running my code as well.
I did have a “sticky key” moment, where I hit return once and it went mental and added about 15 lines but at least it stopped and didn’t freeze.
I figure that one could be a driver issue, or a pi issue somewhere, but if it is then it’s very minor and only happened once tonight.

I’ve had the mouse jamming up again, the only thing I can think of that isn’t “it’s a bug” related is if there was high CPU usage.
I had a look for anything that would tell me the CPU usage on RISC OS and couldn’t find anything.
I thought if you can’t monitor the CPU directly, you could write a program that see’s how long a wimp_poll takes, if you benchmark off that you should be able to get an idea i think, maybe a user editable value like set 0% to .1ms and 100ms to 70% etc. It’s a fudge, but it would give some idea – if I ever get my first bit of code finished I may give that a go as a prelude to writing some useful wimp apps. Found a rss news feeder – !Ticker though in my hour searching for software ;-)

The keyboard is still sticking and the mouse jamming up.
And Fat32FS is unusable (freezes machine with hourglass until I unplug the drive and hard disc light goes crazy) this is with a 1TB drive – worked fine before btw, just after the alpha stopped
