Could not read !Printers configuration file

Hi,

I am struggling to overcome the error given by !GPSetup (part of Gutenprint), given in the title.

I have a Pi 3B running RISC OS 5.24, which is printing very well with Gutenprint and a HP Photosmart 7660.

I have tried placing the driver (PhSm7550 – the nearest available) both within !Printers and the $.Printing directory, but to no avail.

I believe everything is installed correctly because it otherwise works well, and I used the installation script.

Any help greatly appreciated.

nb. I have “Saved Choices” for the loaded !Printers printer driver.

I have recently had this same error on a Titanium with RO5.24, trying to install GutenPrint 2.32. It seems to be because !GPSetup is using PrinterChoices:Settings, which does not exist because PrinterChoices$Path does not exist, only Printers$ChoicesRW = Boot:Choices.Printers

I tried *set PrinterChoices$Path <Printers$ChoicesRW>., which allows GPSetup to run. However, when trying to print a test Drawfile it locks the machine up … and worse a Ctrl-Break cannot find the disc, and I did have a Bad Free Space Map reported at some stage. Fortunately a Reset booted normally!

I am using a printer that I know works with Gutenprint, as it was used on my Iyonix (RIP).

I have had similar problems recently on all my native machines. Since I regularly install updates of both ROM and hard drive image, and do not use Gutenprint very often, I have no idea when it started. Using that ever helpful statement that developers love – ‘it was working, and now it is not’ 8)

Much the same here: I have not managed to get it to work since my Iyonix died in February. Since then I have been running on a temporary RPi3 and not really bothered with printing directly, but now with my Titanium I really need to revive it.

What version of Gutenprint have you? Mine is v2.32, but there is an upgrade to 2.42 avilable and I am awaiting response from Martin W about that.

Checking the help files, GPDriver2 is version 2.42 (1 Jul 2012) and GPSetup is version 2.40 (5 Jun 2010).

Printing via Gutenprint still works, but it is not possible to change the setup. I tried to do this a few months back because the colours looked a bit odd, and this is when I found the problem with GPSetup.

That gives me hope that when I get the newer Gutenprint it will enable me to print. You may like to try my fix in the first post to ee if it enables GPsetup to run.

Indeed it does, so I will do a few test prints tomorrow to see if the setup needs adjustment to get better colour rendering.

After battling through GitLab, I found that !Printers v1.88 (26 Feb 2018) was changed to use the standard <Printers$ChoicesRW> rather than the non-allocated <PrinterChoices$Path>

Thus a
*set PrinterChoices$Path <Printers$ChoicesRW>
will resolve the
Could not read !Printers configuration file
error when trying to start !GPsetup until it is updated. I will notify Martin W.

Thanks Martin, I have placed the command in the !Run file of !GPSetup of my 2.42 version of GutenPrint and I can now control the set up on my ARMX6.

That change caused a lot of issues at the time and I contact a number of developers who changed their programs i.e !PrintSpool but I forgot about GutenPrint.

Just to conclude this, I can confirm that Gutenprint v2.42 resolves my nasty abort problems, and I have notified Martin W of the GPSetup issue.
