RPi, TV and Overscan

I have some problems with my TV and the RPi running RISC OS. The problem is that there is a lot of overscan – so I can barely see the icons on the icon bar. What I have tried is editing the config.txt file with no avail. Even though I can get the picture to fit on my screen, it seems that RISC OS knows nothing about this resizing. I have to click the mouse not ON the icon, but where the icon would be if disable_overscan is set to 1. In essence, I have to move the pointer 20 pixels to the bottom left of the position where I expect the click to happen. I’m using a TV running at 1920×1080 on an HDTV. |

Had the same problem with my HDTV using the HDMI output. As a workaround I just changed my TV’s display setting, as changing the display settings in ROS did not give me a result I was happy with. |

Great! I found a setting on my TV which effectively switches off overscan, and it works as expected now. |

The other problem I’ve found with TVs is that they tend to have picture sharpening turned on. This has the effect of un-antialiasing the fonts, making them look awful :-( |

All TVs are thrown out of the factory with far too much blue in the picture, sharpening turned up and who knows what else. It’s a good idea to calibrate your TV’s settings. I used a BluRay disc called HD Basics to guide me. I got a far better picture at the end of the process. |
