LM98 and Win 10

Today I’ve upgraded (?) Her PC from Win 7 Pro 64bit to Win 10 Pro 64bit, version 1903 but when VRPC is run LanMan98/4 won’t connect to other things. (A USB attached Harddrive for example).
Reporting:
“Insufficient server memory to perform the requested function.”

I have a nag at the back of my bonce I encountered this some while back when upgrading one of my machines, when W10 first came out, but I can’t remember what caused it and possibly a solution.

Any help please?

FWIW. I have increased the IRPStackSize but it hasn’t resolved the problem.

Please note: Recent versions of Windows 10 have the support for SMB1 turned OFF by default.
An update or similar may well turn off what you previously had turned on.
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-access-files-network-devices-using-smbv1-windows-10 tells you how to turn it on again.

I think I may have suggested SMB at that point in time.

Oh, and as an only vaguely connected item of info:
IE11 on Windows 7 doesn’t support the stronger ciphers for TLS1.2, but the same version number of IE11 on Windows 10 does. I believe that’s a variation in the capabilities of WinHTTP in the two OS (not finished digging yet).

Yesterday afternoon after the Win 7 to 10 update/install completed, as part of the re-config process I’d already checked that particular W10 update pain in the bum and made sure it was ticked on.
Not forgeting the Win Share settings, and then sometimes having to re-share Drives, directories… :-(

I believe, way back when… You did flag up this particular W10 problem, then later IIRC. Bernard V. produced a LM98 and Win 10 crib sheet “https://www.bapfish.org.uk/networking.htm”

Works without problems through W10 connected to either USB3 or USB 2 ports.

Previously in Win 7 Pro:
It worked without problems through RO and LM98.

Now Win 10 Pro:
Works without problems through W10 connected to either USB3 or USB 2 ports.

From RO through LM98
LM98 won’t even run the disk to the icon bar.

I have absolutely no idea why one type of Drive will work and another type will not… Way beyond my postage stamp of knowledge. :-)

I guess the simplest solution is, get her an SSD in a USB enclosure for her RO backup. ;-)

Hmm, I’m wondering whether the drive as presented through to RO has too large a figure on an aspect of the heads/sectors/tracks such that LM98 tries to claim more memory than is available (wimpslot) or whether it is simply beyond the LM98 allocated space for the drive map.
If it’s simply a wimpslot issue then setting a larger default slot and testing would perhaps succeed, if it’s a LM98 issue on coping with the layout then a modified LM98 module may be needed.

I know someone has done work on extending the LMFS (not LM98) capabilities wrt drive size. Was that Colin experimenting or someone else?

So to test…
The default Wimpslot for LM98 is 64K so I’ve done some trials with it gradually being bumped up to 2048K, but the “Insufficient memory…” error remained.

Both Her spinning rust HD and my spinning rust HD are 500Gigs each. But of course the error message from Hers and mine were different. (Both are formatted NTFS).

The SSDs are also 500 Gigs, formatted NTFS and as previously noted work okay.

Funny ol’ business.

Ah well, as that little problem seems unresolvable… I’ve taken other measures…

Ooops! Guess I should have said…

1) As a temp measure, created a Mount for that drive in VRPC.

2) Purchased an SSD in a USB3 enclosure, (Waiting for it to arrive) so she can get back to doing it the way she wants with LM98.

Yup! after setting it up and sorting the Win sharing/permissions, the SSD now works okay for her through VRPC and LM98.

I still think it very weird that a 500 Gigs USB SSD will work, but a 500Gigs spinning rust in a USB enclosure won’t.
