Unicode

As a result of an OT thread on wish lists, I have managed to get unicode partially working on my Iyonix. I have an obey file in predesk that sets alphabet to utf8. I have the system font set to Cyberbit. I am running !KeyMap I can enter cyrillic, this is the russian for hat: шапка As long as I stick to ascii (i.e. avoid £) in apps that don’t understand it, it should work ok. However there appear to be some issues: Using a non ascii characters in certain places (including the address bar of netsurf) gives double entries the keyboard character followed by the mapped character. It looks like this: qю (the onscreen keyboard doesn’t have this issue.) Google translate fails, but google search works as expected. Should this work correctly (subject to the pound sign issue)? Have I done it right? Thanks |

Well I can’t vouch for that program, but all it’s doing is issuing a number Wimp_ProcessKey calls depending on the UTF8 encoding of the desired codepoint. Whether Netsurf also tries to do some keyboard handling and isn’t expecting UTF8 I don’t know. The additional problem with a browser is that there’s little point in typing UTF8 into it if it’s going to submit it to the server marked as ISOLatin1! The pound sign ‘issue’ is a keyboard driver one – it ought to be pushing two (four?) bytes into the keyboard buffer when you press that key. Evidently it isn’t. PS I’m amazed how often people have suggested I wear a hat. |

The double entry also occurs in the bar of phoenix as the entry boxes of many programs, using the program’s onscreen keyboard only gives the cyrillic. Some programs (e.g. Oregano) just respond to the uk keyboard. (If enter a cyrillic URL with the onscreen keyboard, Netsurf reports it is malformed.) Zap appears to work OK with a pound sign, whereas StrongEd shows a character before when typed from the default System, or a couple of characters after if typed using UTF/latin witg KeyMap loaded. |
