How do I update !NetSurf?

So I have the zip file for version 3.10 downloaded, and I can pull out to pling for the new version and put it on my desktop and launch it, but the moment I turn off the computer, the pling is replaced with the 3.09 version. Any help would be appreciated. |

What do you mean “put it on your desktop and launch it”? That’s not a standard RISC OS thing, so I suspect that it’s where you’re going wrong. The copy on your desktop will just be a link to the NetSurf 3.9 application on your SD card, and when you drag 3.10 on to it, it will only update that shortcut to point to version 3.10 in the archive that you downloaded. Unless you the save the changes to the Pinboard contents (Menu over the pinboard and select “Save”), which you do not want to do in this case, then the original link will be restored when the machine next starts up. What you need to do is find the copy of NetSurf on your SD card and replace that with the new one. The easiest way is to reboot so that you’ve got 3.9 on the pinboard, then click Menu over it, hold down Shift on your keyboard, and choose “Selection → Open”. This will open the !NetSurf application folder. You need the folder that this is in, so either click Menu over the directory viewer and choose “Open parent”, or click its Close button with Adjust on the mouse, not Select. You should now be looking at a directory viewer containing the !NetSurf folder that needs to be updated. I’d suggest temporarily renaming it (Alt-click on its name, and maybe replace the ! with an X), then copy the NetSurf 3.10 application into the same folder. Now check that the Pinboard link loads NetSurf 3.10 OK, and if it does, delete the old folder that you just renamed (if it doesn’t work, you can delete the new !NetSurf and then undo the renaming to get NetSurf 3.9 back). NetSurf ships with updates to !Boot and !System, which you probably should merge into your system (although I doubt they’ve changed between 3.9 and 3.10). Click Menu over the Raspberry Pi icon at the right-hand end of the iconbar and select “Configure…”, click on “Boot”, click on “Install”, then drag the !Boot folder supplied with NetSurf 3.10 into the window and click on “Merge”. When complete, go back to the first Configuration window, click on “System”, and do the same with the !System folder that came with NetSurf. PS. It’s probably worth noting that the rename-replace-delete approach is generally the best one, as it ensures that there aren’t any files left hanging around inside the application if the author changed the layout of stuff between versions. However, always check that you can run the new version OK before deleting the old one: some apps, perhaps ones which require registration, store files inside themselves and these can be lost if you delete the old version. You can just copy the new version over the old, but you probably want to check that “Newer” is unticked in the “Options” submenu of the filer menu first. |
