!ABC compiler processor usage

I am using the !ABC Basic compiler (version 4.18) and have two questions.

Can the compiler be speeded up? (3 minutes ¹ to compile 20K seems a long time)

Can the Compiler give other tasks more CPU time?

Yes, I realise these two options are not necesarily compatible.

¹ Even on a Pi 4 at 2000 MHz

Can the compiler be speeded up?

Yes it can. You have three options:

1. Buy the latest DDE (ABC v4.18 has a bug which makes it run really slow on multicore CPUs under RISC OS 5.27)
2. If you’ve got a Pi 3, install RISC OS 5.24 or 5.26 and use that to run ABC
3. If you’ve got a Pi Zero, use that (running RISC OS 5.27)

If you’ve got a Pi3, install RISC OS 5.24 and use that to run ABC.

Wow! Now that is fast. 0.65 seconds instead of 3 minutes. Fortunately a networked Pi3 running 5.24 and VNCserver was already available.

Surely a bug-free update of ABC should be provided without having to lay out for the whole DDE? I have DDE 28, but have no other reason to update.

I have yet to send the new version to everyone who applied. It’ll be ABC 4.23 from DDE 29. I’ll try to send the mails very soon!
