Getting this error on startup

Hi,
I’ve been trying to sort out my sisters old RiscPC and fix the various problems with it.

It’s just got one last (I think) problem with an error message that appears on startup (and reboots).
It’s says:
Machine startup has not completed successfully:‘Route: writing to routing socket: Network is unreachable’

If I click on ‘Ignore’ then the machine finishes booting fine with no apparent ill effects. I can even browse the internet (slowly).

The machine is a Kinetic RiscPC running RO4.39.

I know its old and obsolete but she’d like to have it working as it used to if possible.

Route: writing to routing socket: Network is unreachable’

That sounds like the network configuration may have the “act as IP router” set.

In “Configuration” click Internet
In “Internet Configuation” click “Routing”
If anything in “Routing” is ticked untick it and click on “Set”, “Close” and “Save” to exit that lot and save the settings.

Of course if you’re not going to use it networked you could also kill of the rest of the network setup (unticking the “Enable TCP/IP Protocol Suite”) but you may not want an isolated machine.

Hmmm, I had a look in there and the option was not ticked!
So, I ticked it and rebooted, (same message),
Then I unticked it and did another reboot and the problem was gone!
Weird eh?
Anyway, the problem is fixed now.

I think that’s symptomatic of the GUI change affecting more than one part of the configuration files and you initially had a mix of enabled and disabled (with the disabled part being what the GUI saw)¹
So, when you enabled via the GUI it did everything rather than part and then the disable action via the GUI did all the disable actions (multiple) to set everything disabled.

It was probably a manually edited file or a file over-write done by an upgrade (or similar process).

The networking config is a bit quirky.
