Is 'bash' the Chicken or the Egg?

I have now built a Pi compatible To get it to build the autobuilder was forced to get this version rather than the latest with P.S. There is now a newly built, and therefore Pi compatible, And Platform : Raspberry Pi 400 *uname RISC OS * |

The source hasn’t been changed since that release, but my version’s !RunImage was build on 05-Dev-2017,two years later than the one on the website (28-Aug-2015), probably with a later compiler. I’ll rebuild everything with my 2019 Norcroft, and you can try that to see if it makes any difference. |

Remember, remember, the 05-Dev! |

Thanks a lot, tested few of them on the RPi 3B+ and everything seems to be working, will do more deep testing later tonight or on the weekend. |

@ David J Ruck
great, if you want me to test it on Rpi 400 or other platforms you do not have, just let me know and later will test it together with David Pitt’s stuff :) |

I’ve updated the autobuilder so bash 4.4 successfully builds.
Some of the aliases in CoreUtils cause havoc in RISC OS. e.g. *h. runs the ‘head’ command. |

Many thanks, a build is here |

Awesome awesomeness! Thanks a lot guys, installed on an Rpi 3B+ and bash 4.4 seems to be working fine so far, later will test on Rpi 4/400. :) |

About a third of the way down my search list, described as the secondary meaning by urbandictionary. I have not come across the rude version of FTFY before, but then I try not to hang around places where it is acceptable to say stuff like that. Just had a look and the “f word” appears only six times in the forum’s 105426 posts. There’s one post from 2013 which gets close to being offensive, but is actually painfully funny in hindsight. As for the “FY” part? Not said here at all. So if you don’t mind, I’ll consider FTFY to mean Fixed That For You, and people who choose to interpret it as the nonpolite version can go….. ;-) PS: it’s used frequently in the fixed that sense on El Reg – https://forums.theregister.com/post/search/?q=ftfy |

Talk about your speedy resolutions. I was amazed and delighted to see that bash has been given such prompt attention. I’ve run the new version and it looks really promising. It will take a few days to get familiar with it then, I’ll be back with even more praise, I’m sure. Was also pleased to hear that others have experienced the same fatal error message when starting graphtask. This way I know that I haven’t crippled it with my stumbling about while learning. Been giving Star Commands the deeper perusal it deserves, its power over the hardware and flexibility in scripting had escaped my previous glances. I’ll continue to dig deeper! Again, I’m incredibly pleased with the community surrounding RISCOS. I believe it’s at least half of what is required to take an OS mainstream. Thank you! |

@Paolo I’ve rebuilt GraphTask, and put it on the ARM Club website so please give it a try now. Everything in C on there should have been rebuilt in 2020 or 2021, but I haven’t updated any version numbers at this stage. |

Do we need another stab at getting everything that’s in autobuilder (and destined for users to see in PackMan) buildable again? Might need a bit more pinning of specific versions rather than trying to track current source. |
David Pitt (3386) 1248 posts |
I have made a request via the gcc mailing for a release of bash and coreutils so that they do appear in PackMan. |

Seems to me that many acronyms could have rude meanings if one looks hard enough. Many ordinary words can, too. Scunthorpe (according to AOL) |
John WILLIAMS (8368) 495 posts |
Whilst Scunthorpe could well be an acronym, as it is a pronouncable word, though I don’t believe it actually is one, FTFY is certainly not, at least in English. Perhaps an initialism or abbreviation? |
Chris Hall (132) 3559 posts |
So Could You Not Think How an Ordinary Real Phrase would Equate to Scunthorpe? FTFY is certainly not, It is definitely pronouncible in Welsh as they love consonants and it is a phonetic language. |
John WILLIAMS (8368) 495 posts |
Fazakerley, as we say here locally! |
Rick Murray (539) 13851 posts |
The problem with Scunthorpe isn’t anything to do with abbreviations having rude alternatives, it is because an overzealous and braindead obscenity checker would reject the word. Place names can be like that – Arsenal, Penistone, Clitheroe, and Shittake mushrooms. But, yeah, just shows how mundane things can be impolite should one wish to try… |
Rick Murray (539) 13851 posts |
Ah, Welsh. Not quite as word purée with a garnish of letter salad as Polish or Irish girl’s names, but definitely something a non-native speaker won’t get right on the first, second, or third attempt… ;-) |

I know how to pronounce Aoife thanks to a Vicar of Dibley episode poking fun at said spelling! |
Steve Pampling (1551) 8172 posts |
I’ve maintained for years that that affection is because vowels cost extra, so they reused the consonants :)
Met one the other year that came from Tipperary1 to whom I pointed out two things:
1 She’s bored rigid with long way to Tipperary pickup lines |

Many rude acronyms became ordinary words. NAFF for example, which I believe was Polari not available for fucking . Have a look at the 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (ISBN 0-695-80216-X) where you will see that a great draught of rude words flows through our language, constantly renewed. |

How rude! But at least an acronym! |
