Customizing level of !Help

Is is possible to set !Help to an intermediate level, so that it provides a description of things like unlabeled icons without (for example) giving a three line description of what the “close window” button does? |

The protocol only has one level of information, but it’s possible for the application displaying the help messages to do some filtering. I like Steve F’s !Float http://www.stevefryatt.org.uk/risc-os/float |

Open configure, open help, see what “Show common messages” is set to, off removes some |

Which reminds me that Configure is still nicely hidden. This can be rectified by a one time action: Open Configure, open the Boot Configure, select add to Apps and drag the !Configure onto that from |

or Create an obey file with the following and place it in !Boot.Choices.Boot.Tasks.

Iconbar clutter |

but not hidden or calling an illegal path. |

The protocol only has one level of information, but it’s possible for the application displaying the help messages to do some filtering. !Float’s core feature (i.e. floating rather than window based text) is now !Help’s default behaviour. It would still be very useful, however, for !Help to have an option to automatically trim descriptions (e.g. “This is the icon for X. Click SELECT to Y.” becomes just “X. Click to Y.” or even just X.) |

Float can hide messages from window furniture, iconbar icons (or the default ones, at least – it’s been a while since I looked at the options) and from named applications (eg. Filer windows, the Pinboard, or applications that you decide you’re proficient with).
It would need to be able to read and interpret the text used in help messages to do that, though. I doubt that you could even rely on applications using the help tokens, either. |
