Nutpi disc not formatted error

Hi I’m having trouble mounting my Nutpi sd card. I followed the steps on the payment letter and I get nothing but “Error when reading SDFS::0.$ – Disc not understood – has it been formatted?” When I plug it into my laptop I get a 127Mb fat32 partition mounting. That’s as much information that I have, any ideas? |

I’ve just plugged in my NutPi SD into a card reader, inserted it in a RPi, & it mounts as: SCSI::NutPi.$ Doing the same on my mac, Finder asks if I want to “ignore or eject” the card (I’ve set the write protect tab), so firing up “Disk Utility”, it tells me the NutPi is a “126.9 MB Generic-SD/MMC Media disk” so I don’t understand why you get “fat32 partition”? Maybe you’re trying to mount it via MS windows? |

The first question is – is the NutPi card bootable? Can you start RISC OS on the Pi by powering up with the card inserted? If the answer is yes, then there NEEDS to be a FAT partition in order that the embedded bootloader can work (it only understands FAT). Are there any files in the FAT part? If, on the other hand, the NutPi card is a 128MB card formatted to RISC OS’ own specific format [with no boot capabilities], then something has gone wrong if you are able to mount a valid FAT partition! So, while I have no experience of the NutPi, the two questions I would ask are:

Hi Michael did you remove your riscos SD card then put the nutpi SD card in without turning power off or did you expect you needed to re-boot it? |

1. The NutPi accompanying readme suggests not, but I thought I’d do the unthinkable & actually test that :-) It doesn’t boot, hence my surprise at the “fat32” from the OP. RiscOS says it’s SDFS::NutPi.$ when I unmount the boot SD, & insert NutPi, which is different from the card reader insertion I mentioned in my previous post. 2. Just on the off chance OS X writes a few bytes to it, I haven’t enabled the write tab on the SD when I insert it in my mac, so “Disk Utility” says it’s 126.9. When I work out how to backup the card (I’m new to RiscOS, as I was never able to afford a BBC µ at the time), I’ll risk enabling it in which case I can pretend I’m going to partition the card in which case OS X will tell me its true capacity (well, true as in whatever the card reports to Disk Utility ;) ) |

This sounds a lot like there’s something wrong with your card. It shouldn’t show up as FAT formatted and it should appear as SDFS::NutPi.$ under RISC OS. Try reporting this to notify@riscosopen.org |
