Iyonix hardware problem

My parents have an Iyonix: the original case design with the light blue oval power button at a jaunty angle. Today they tell me that the machine comes on, and the desktop is shown as normal, and Alarm shows a clock which keeps time, but the computer is not responding to the keyboard or mouse. The mouse has its light lit, so is getting power from the USB sockets, but the pointer is not moving on screen. The keyboard does not have the Num Lock light lit as they would expect to see. We’ve tried plugging them into all the different sockets, front and back, and leaving one or other unplugged. I think this Iyonix model might have a separate USB interface board, so perhaps this has stopped working? Are all the sockets plugged in that way, or are some direct from the motherboard? Anything else they could try? I’m not sure they have any other USB keybaord/mouse in the house to try, but it would be a big coicidence for both to have stopped functioning at the same time. |

All the Iyonx USB comes from a USB PCI card, so it’s possible this has failed in some way. One thing would be to just take it out and put it back in again, to reseat the connection, but failing that it’s going to need a replacement PCI card by the sounds of it. |

I may well (99%) have a spare USB card in the ex-Castle Iyonix spares box if needed. Also worth commenting that Iyos tend to have PSU issues that manifest in numerous odd/unexpected ways, so it could also be that. Whilst I’d definitely recommend trying to repair if pos (if only because the machine is not doubt a much-loved friend), I’d would tend to gently sow the seed that the machine is now probably 15 years of age, and at the very least, make sure data is backed up… |

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I’ll try taking our Iyonix apart to see whether reseating the USB card is something I fancy talking them through over the phone. Probably not! Data was backed up a week or so ago using SafeStore. The PSU was replaced a few years ago by CJE, so it’s less likely to be a PSU issue. I’ve actually got a new machine almost set up for them to have: was going to go down before Easter to install but then got Covid. Had planned to visit after the Wakefield Show but I might need to go down a bit sooner now! |

Maybe, but I had to replace the PSU of my Iyonix every few year. No doubt your parents will be very pleased by the Pi4. |
