Virtual RPC AdjustSA & Windows 10

Hi In the meantime maybe this community might be able to help me. I have the following issue When I run VRPC-AdjustSA in windows 10 I am receiving the following error see the message below The error reads “This application uses an obsolete executable file format which is no longer supported by RISC OS” This error message can be triggered by going to " !Configure > Display > AutoMode " This also seemingly prevents RISC OS from remembering the video settings sent in " !Configure > Display > Monitor " I have looked at the manual and the instructions there are unable to help preserve the Video Settings between Power Cycles of the VM. Just to update everyone The issue seems to be the following, The contents of the Disc include RISC OS 6.20 which is having the error. Any help “advice” would be greatly appreciated (just saves me time searching myself if I get a sign post on where to start) Regards Iain |

Further update I have found the following issues in HostFS::Harddisc4.$.!Boot.RO6Log and basically the folder/container RO6Patches does not exist PinSetup cannot be copied from HostFS::HardDisc4.$.!Boot.Utils.RO6Patches to the location in HostFS::HardDisc4.$.!Boot.Choices.Users.Single.Boot.Tasks.Pinsetup !VIDCrpc cannot be copied from HostFS::HardDisc4.$.!Boot.Utils.RO6Patches to HostFS::HardDisc4.$.VICD !Softload cannot be copied from HostFS::HardDisc4.$.!Boot.Utils.RO6Patches to HostFS::HardDisc4.$.Softload I am not sure how much this is causing my issues Regards Iain |

OK, I think you are getting into a tangle here. First where on the Windows 10 computer have you installed VRPC ? If its inside the Program Files folder then the files will be locked as part of the Windows security to prevent tampering in that folder. You need to install it outside the Program Files structure. More inportantly I am not aware of RISC OS 6.20 being supplied as standard with VRPC, it’s normally RISC OS 4.02 or 4.39. Once that is installed you can install RISC OS 6.20 on top of it using the Installed CD for RISC OS 6.20. VRPC was developed in the days of Windows XP originally and had various patches added to it over the years, including an updated installer. |

Hi Chris thank you for your reply Yes I have noticed my two different Discs ( serial numbers redacted from the images 3 and 4 below) and by default install path is different between the two VRPC discs (shown in a bit). Google Drive Shared Image Yes, I am aware of the fact that VRPC is rather old but I certainly feel cheated since it was supplied as broken and I might have to see about other means of fixing it or obtaining an install CD for RISC OS 6.20. It certainly is a surprise to find RISC OS 6.20 as default in the VRPC install. You will see from the images, first is that is it is “RISC OS 6.20” second is that they by default have two different install paths " older one is C:\Program Files\VirtualAcorn\VirtualRPC-AdjustSA" and the Newer Disc is “C:\VirtualAcorn\VirtualRPC-AdjustSA” and there is another ROM image “StrongARM RISC OS Adjust UPGRADE” which when run the has the same issues but also the mouse does not work (not captured) third is the newer printed Disc (says Window 8) but does say RISC OS 4.39, which is not true as stated by the first image forth is the older printed Disc which as you say Windows XP was the main Windows OS when VRPC was developed and released So now you can understand a little frustration when you pay money and expect it to be working “oobe” and are left rather disappointed when it is not the case Regards Iain |

Hmm, when you say broken, in what way? Were these sold second hand to you. Both should be installed to second path you listed nowadays. On the HostFS drive with RISC OS 6.20 is there a folder called RISC OS 6 by any chance? if so you might find the RISC OS 6 uninstaller. |

OS6 introduced checking to ensure that executables are correctly headered. (It’s a subject all of its own.) It is a good thing but the downside is that older stuff that has never heard of such a notion will not now run. This is the issue here as tested with AutoMode. Fortunately a mechanism to override this little complication is provided. Double click on !Boot, open Configuration, open Compatibility, tick all the boxes. Hopefully the boot should complete. If an error occurs in the Boot sequence the boot stops. It gives that effect that boot settings appear not to have actually been set. HTH. |

Hi Chris Thank you for your reply You are correct there is a “RISC OS 6 uninstaller”. No, it was not a second hand but sold directly through the the Virtual Acorn There is a security issue (SSL certificate I think Domain?) flagged up but Kaspersky. The two disks have been purchased a different times. Thank you for your Reply David, I shall give that a go or uninstall RISC OS 6 Regards Iain |

Hi bg.(Hmm, when you say broken, in what way?) The Display Settings “Configuration, Display, Monitor” always start out at 640×480 and do not remember the setting of 1440×900. I can understand if OS6 does things differently and that causes issues for the emulation, but some warning before buying would be nice and considering the website still lists as being supplied with OS4 and this starts up with OS6 is a little concerning. The receipt which came with the latest disc matches the website information so I do not believe the disc is second hand or a forgery. As David has said this could be down to the checking of executables that OS6 introduced. FAO David: I cannot find the “Compatibility” to which you are referring. FAO Chris: When I tried to uninstall “RISC OS 6 uninstaller,” it says it will uninstall and needs to reboot, and when it reboots it as if nothing has happened. Regards Iain |

The website is using a self-signed certificate. In these days of Let’s Encrypt, that seems a little unhelpful. |

That implies that something has gone wrong with the OS6 install. The Compatibity app itself is at |

Self signed and expired, as of 23rd March. That’ll be the primary reason for the cert being rejected. |

Hi all, and thank you for all your Help I think I know the answer to the problems. I uninstalled and removed all VRPC folders “VirtualAcorn” then started my PC and installed fresh VRPC I likely had an old VRPC folder copied across from a previous install of windows where I had tried to install OS6 previously and it errored Going say this is all now resolved, even though I feel like an idot.
