RPCEmu MackPop

Hi to all, I’m about to buy a Linux laptop to and install the RISC OS 5 Emulation on it. But there are a few things I’d like to be certain of, before taking the plunge. With my current Laptop, a MacBook Pro, I use MacPop to gain access to a memory stick. How does this work with the RISC OS-5 emulation? is there a ready-to-go icon to click on? Steve RM |

Not that I’m aware of, but as long as the stick’s mount point is accessible to your linux user, all you need to do (in my experience) is create a symlink to it in a directory inside the hostfs structure. |

Thanks for replying Frank, I was hoping to have a some what more out-of-the-box solution. I’ll await some more reactions. Steve RM |

Here, MacPop 0.01 came with the Mac version of Virtual Acorn. It was tried here on Ubuntu 22.04 on a Lenovo laptop. By way of creating a little false hope for use on RPCEmu RO5 at least it is 32bit. The first harbinger of doom is an error to say HostFS2 is required. HostFS2 is a VRPC thing not present in RPCEmu. Commenting out the relevant line in !Run does get MacPop to the iconbar but clicking Select merely comes up with “MacPop is unable to scan for storage devices”. |

Steve – just a quick reminder that last Monday at ROUGOL Zoom meeting, I demo-ed a new (native) RISC OS laptop that can dual-boot into Linux. Granted, Linux on Intel is likely to be a better experience than Linux on ARM, but conversely, native RISC OS is likely to be better than emulated. And USB stick pop-up works! :) |
