how to access !WebJames

Greetings,
I managed to run WebJames on pi and I am able to access site website using local host. However, when I attempted to access it from another PC on the same network following webjames manual by typing http://RISCOSpi/ (which is my raspberry pi host name) I am not getting the webjames page at all instead I am getting search engine results.
What I am missing here? Any suggestions?

I imagine you would have to have “RISCOSPi” in the hosts list of the client computer?
Maybe you could use ping to see what is connecting.
I always use static addressing and ip no’s whenever possible, It cuts out an un-necessary layer and can be faster in some applications.
I cant recall the quote to substantiate that claim, and I’m not using Webjames.
I have a serial port program in the works that can execute a CLI command which could be an automated file transfer command such as pscp. Connecting pi to pi would not need the level convertor that I use when connecting pi to Iyonix via serial.
Raspbian runs a serial console continuously.
There are no serial drivers for RISC OS pi yet,
but it would remove the overhead of running Webjames.
Also, wasn’t there a RISC OS ftp server around once?
Not to say it would not be worthwhile finding a bug in the networking though.

Your PC has to look up “RISCOSpi” to translate to an address. Where does it look? Do you have a DNS server on your LAN for your local hosts? Otherwise it will look in its hosts file, then after that it’s a search on the internet.

Your PC has a number of ways of translating the name of another machine into the IP address:
1. Local lookup table (hosts file – windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. Note that it is “hosts” not hosts.txt)
2. WINS – microsofts attempt to reinvent web name lookup and failing as it doesn’t scale.
3. DNS – This will ask the defined DNS server (as shown by IPCONFIG/ALL at the command prompt) what the name translates to, if your local router (probably a standard ADSL beastie) has a DNS service then it can answer the query, if not it passes the query through to the ISP DNS which doesn’t know anything about your local devices. (As per Dave H’s reply)
Actually there’s another, LMHOSTS, but we can ignore that in this instance.

Your options are to investigate the DNS capabilities of your router (DHCP and DNS interact nicely to always give the right info) or to reserve an address for the Pi:
either in your DHCP setup and add that specific IP and name to the HOSTS file in the connecting PC.
or,
if the DHCP setup in the router doesn’t allow reservation entries, make sure the DHCP only hands out addresses for PART of the /24 scope in use and make the Pi a manually configured static IP in the other part (to avoid clashes) and then add that IP to your HOSTS file. e.g.
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.2.4 RISCOSPi

Change the IP above to what suits you.

I have found that the simplest way to test a !WebJames server using a client on a Windows operating system browser, is to type http://192.168.1.8 in your browser’s address bar, where the IP address you use is that of your Raspberry Pi

You can easily find the IP address of the Raspberry Pi by typing Show *IPaddr in a TaskWindow

Yes, RISCOS comes with software for sharing files between two RISCOS computers. ShareFS is very easy to use.
