Hmm, eBay by any chance? I’ve set myself two golden rules:
My €2 USB-to-serial lead never arrived. Don’t know if I was even charged for it. To be honest, I’d rather lose €2 than the time it would take chasing that up. I don’t plan to buy another, I don’t need it that badly. I’m sure some eBay sellers are great and decent people. I recently bought a lovely Yuki Nagato bag for about €10 that I’m really pleased with [picture; bonus: you can laugh at my “greying hair on a windy day”]. |

Just for contrast, in the 11 years I’ve been using eBay I’ve never had a bad experience. I’ve bought loads of small specialist thingies, sold a fairly large number of computers and parts and not once had a problem with non-delivery or non-payment. Most recently I bought a case, hdmi-to-dvi cable, uUSB PSU, ethernet pigtail etc for my Pi and got the lot for around C$50; my local bits store wanted C$50just for the hdmi cable! |

No offer on ebay. I inquired directly and the price was less than 10 €. It was the first time that nothing has arrived me. The parts that were previously broke when tinkering are more expensive;-) I would only have been finished sooner if I would have built the cable immediately. |

@Tim I’ve been using eBay I’ve never had a bad experience I echo that. Things from China arrive just as expected and those from the UK are usually quicker than the big suppliers. The eBay system of messages is reassuring, too. @Raik The parts that were previously broke when tinkering are more expensive;-) Very true, very true. ;-( |

I was pointed at using supercaps for this purpose by a very early post about the Lapdock on the RPi forums, but I have not seen it discussed since. There are different sorts of supercap and you need to avoid those intended for slow discharge rates. There are two 1.0F 2.3V caps joined in series making 0.5F 4.6V. My model A Pi runs for about 5 sec on the stored charge. I have seen people refer to supercaps as miniature hand-grenades – there is 2.5C stored, which could make a substantial spark and the short discharge current might heat the cap. so much that it could explode.
No, but I think someone has posted that information on the RPi forum. I do not think it is very important, because the current used by the dormant Lapdock is tiny – the screen and USB hub are off. |

I have once killed because I have confused the power (230V on 24V). A crack like New Year’s Eve fireworks;-)
Could be pin 19. Hot plug detection. I will try this. |

@Raik Since you are obviously pleased with the portability of the stick, I thought I would have a look and see whether I could do something similar with my phone, a Samsung Note running Android 4. This has a feature for various sorts of tethering, including USB. I realised I would need the ComCentre software, so downloaded it. With all respect to Thomas, it is not easy. I think I have all the dependencies except the PPP module, but I have not got as far as needing that yet. I would be very grateful for some hand-holding if you think it is possible to do this. I am at steve[at]kappa[dot]me.[uk]. |

Ok, 15mm my last case without a “orgy of desoldering” ;-) Only “RCA video out” I have removed. |

I can only find one other mention of an item similar to this in the forum, so I thought I would add my recommendation over my previous Edimax NanoRouter, which is long-winded to set up. Is anyone else using one? Vonets VAP11G WiFi Bridge Dongle – Wireless Networks Access PointIt cost £14.25 including postage via Amazon from TimeTop. Others are selling it at somewhat more. It is very easy to set up on Windows and transfer to a Pi. |

Is anyone else using one? I will be soon – I have just ordered one (Vonets VAP11G WiFi Bridge Dongle – Wireless Networks Access Point) at £15 from Amazon. |

Hmmm, no Vonets on Amazon.fr. eBay.fr wants about €22 cheapest; or ~€15 from China. Here’s a laugh. I don’t speak/read German, but this sure-as-hell looks like some guy is asking a grand for it! Raik, can you please confirm? €999? Seriously?! |

I have found this http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360397451855 . The most other offers are about 22,-€. |

The answer: No info about the real price. |

I am interested in buying a Vonets VAP11G wifi bridge, so have pushed a little reading. Apprently there is a python script to set up the device on Linux (and I suppose RISC OS?): |
