Install NetUtils under Risc OS 3.10?

How can I install the NetUtils for Risc OS 3.10 in Arculator_V2.0_Windows? I unzip it and then double click on the icon but nothing happens. http://www.riscos.com/ftp_space/310/index.htm Thanks. Micky |

Nothing will appear on the icon bar. When you run it (or it is ‘seen’ during startup) NetUtils just ensures that a couple of updated modules are loaded. |

That means something is missing. Which updated moduls are missing? Micky |

Nothing is missing: “NetUtils is a patch utility to load the NetUtils, FilerUtil and BorderUtil modules”. And it does. If you don’t know why you’re loading NetUtils, perhaps it’s best not to? Is something particularly suggesting that you do this? |

Shure, I have no ethernet without this. Micky |

Just curious, but why use version 2.0 (9th November 2019) instead of version_2.2 (24th June 2023) ? |

I tested both versions. With both I have no ethernet with Risc OS 3.10. Micky |

3 – 4 years of bugfixes in v2.2 though |

Have you added an Ethernet podule in the Arculator configuration? I would advise 2.2. What Archimedes system are you emulating? |
-Micky (10269) 143 posts |
Yes, I have an ethernet podule. I tried out several systems. That means not all of the systems have ethernet? Micky |

I don’t see any Ethernet podules listed in Arculator 2.0, whereas Arculator 2.2 supports several types. You will have to allow Arculator traffic through the Windows Firewall. No Archimedes system had Ethernet on motherboard, if that’s what you’re thinking. |

I tested it with Arculator 2.2. It was a typing error from me. I mean 2.2. Arculator traffic through the Windows Firewall is allowed. I need a Ethernet podule. This means I need Netutils too to have access to the Ethernet network. It’s like a network card and the network driver for Pc’s. Correct? Micky |

The correct Ethernet driver code is supplied on the (emulated) Podule ROM. You do not need NetUtils. What you DO need is the full1 UniBoot and to carefully follow the instructions in the Readme-Networking file in Arculator 2.2. Don’t deviate from those! 1 cut down UniBoot for RISC OS 3.1 did not work for me. Is there some particular software that accesses the Internet that you NEED to use on RISC OS 3.1? Can’t you use the much easier-to-use RPCEmu (with RISC OS Direct bits). |

Let me expain. I use a Raspberry Pi 3b+ with Risc OS 5.28. All is fine and I like it. And I have a Novell Netware 5.1 Server with IPX and TCPIP. There is a Novell Netware client for Risc OS here: https://www.kingswood-consulting.co.uk/nwclient/ My hope is that this program runs with Aculator 2.2 and Risc OS 3.10 because it did not with the Raspberry Pi and Risc OS 5.28. You double click the icon and then comes this message: Can’t load RiscIPX module. (internal code 140/1). With RPCEmu and Risc OS 3.10 I had no success too. Someone told me that RPCEmu is not the first choice to test the Novell Netware client. Micky |

I am able to run NWClient on Arculator 2.2 / A540 / RISC OS 3.10 / Acorn Ethernet III podule; the RiscIPX, NWClient and NWFiler modules load. I get the icon bar icon but have no Novell server to connect to.
Surely one of RISC OS 3.50, 3.60 or 3.71? RPCEmu does not run RO 3.10. [Edit # 1: I am also able to run NWClient on RPCEmu 0.9.4 / StrongARM / RISC OS 3.71] [Edit #2: Whether Arculator or RPCEmu support non-IP protocols I neither know nor really care.] |

Well, that’s clearly a bug fix1 :). Never looked at the Arculator setup, but RPCEmu on Windows (unless you use the TAP bridge interface setup) uses a virtual router to forward packets from the emulator to the host Windows and thus to the local network. 1 Stopping IPX running is definitely a network fix. Netware 4 worked happily with no IPX, Netware 5 would definitely be happy without it |

Now it works! I use RPCEmu 0.9.4 with Risc OS 3.71 with ethernet bridge. Unpacking the nwclient.zip with SparkPlug V2.29 helps. And now I have access to Novell Netware 5.1 with IPX. Micky |
