Micky, you might find reading this page will help with quotes and other things: https://textile-lang.com/doc/block-quotations |

I’ve never tried it so may be way off, but are we not missing something? It says “read Acorn floppy disks”, format is definitely not reading. |

It does say read in the manual, but I can also write / format on my set up. (XP Pro) You could possibly try the original Floppy Driver update for early versions of VA5000. At your own risk of course.(It should just install driver files to your system, so I wouldn’t expect it to cause too much trouble). Maybe make a backup of your VRPC-DL install in case you need to re-install it if need be Bottom of this page. ‘FloppyUpdate’ (Just that bit not any of the other patches / updates) |

I try it out and it works! Many thanks to you. The reason was the missing floppy driver. Why is the floppy driver missing in this version from VirtualRPC-DL? It is possible to format and write Acorn dics. My disc made with Omniflop works too. It is also possible to format and write Dos discs. All with floppy :0 Micky |

Ah good, one of those cases where read means use. |

It would help if the vendor spent five minutes adding a link to the now-missing driver rather than people having to trawl third-party sites. Stick a disclaimer alongside stating it requires 32-bit systems of certain vintage and specification and that its use is now unsupported, rather than the bullet point in the sales pitch which implies that it’s part of what you’re purchasing. |

I send a email to the vendor. Hope he answers. Micky |

Glad you got sorted. Sorry I think I may have confused the issue a bit. My old XP system had VA5000 installed on it some considerable time ago (some years !). When this was originally installed it came with a ‘driver install’. I guess when I installed VRPC-DL quite recently it just detected the driver already on my system from the older VA5000 install So as you say it obviously isn’t part of the VRPC-DL install. Hopefully it’s an oversight and your email will get it sorted for future purchasers… |

I definitely have the “realfloppy” driver in my VRPC-DL original archive, so it was once part of it. I had a very early version (i.e. bought at the day it was first available) and the bundled HostFS was broken…something seemed to be very complicated with producing a working VRPC-DL. |

Seems that 32bit Vista works – I wonder if later Win 32bit vers work as well. I wonder if RedSq could be made work as well? |
Stuart Swales (8827) 1357 posts |
I don’t think there were many systems post-Vista that actually had floppy drives (or controllers)? My last proper floppy systems pre-date that.
Floppy Driver states “Copyright © 2002, Red Squirrel Technologies Ltd” so perhaps it already does. [Kind of doubt it…] |

A FWIW. Here I’ve been using both RISC OS 4.39 on one VRPC-DL, and for my day to day work, RISC OS 6.20 on another VRPC-DL. Dave |
Steve Pampling (1551) 8170 posts |
The difference between the two being more than 1.81 I presume. |
-Micky (10269) 143 posts |
How did you manage this? When I change the !Boot and the rom to 4.39 then VirtualRPC-DL did not start. The emulator open his window and then nothing happend. Micky |
Dave Symes (425) 156 posts |
Sorry Steve, I don’t understand what you mean. Dave |
Steve Pampling (1551) 8170 posts |
You’re talking about running two different versions of the ROL fork of RO. The 1.81 was, of course, me being me. |
Dave Symes (425) 156 posts |
VRPC-DL is not like RPCEmu, just changing the ROM doesn’t do the business, you need the full update installer kit from RO LTD. ATM. I can’t find the URL for the RISC OS version update, but I would imagine someone here knows it. Dave |

I think it’s at this page… http://www.riscos.com/upgrades/index.php There you can purchase the various VRPC RO OS upgrades. Dave |

Ah I now see your point… Thanks. :-) My reasons for having multiple VRPC-DL available was/is, I test ‘things’ to see if they’ll work on various versions of RISC OS from 4.02 through to 6.20, and including 5.29 on a RPCEmu install. Dave |

NP. I can’t recall whether I’ve mentioned my ethos before: Information is key, making as much as possible available to everyone is common sense. The most difficult task I can imagine is making decisions based on only partial information. |

For my VirtualRPC-DL I have installed RISC OS 4.39 Easy upgrade – from RISC OS 4.02. Works perfect. Is it possible to change the processor from Arm 710 to StrongARM? Micky |
Stuart Swales (8827) 1357 posts |
That’s useful to know that this is still possible.
I think you’re out of luck there – the StrongARM variants of VirtualRPC were more expensive. |
-Micky (10269) 143 posts |
It is because only with StrongARM processor NwClient is working. With Arm 710 not. Yes, I can use RPCEmu, here I have access to Novell, but no access to real floppys. Risc OS 4.39 is my favorite OS but only with real floppy support. Micky |
Colin Ferris (399) 1814 posts |
I wonder if the author of ICE could add the missing ARM opps of the StrongArm? Another option – use Red Squirrel – bit slower but modern machines are quite quick. |
