Can't send email

Since coming to Australia, Messenger won’t send emails. NetFetch can fetch email. I haven’t changed the settings in NetFetch/Messenger. What could be wrong? Others in the house can send via the house router using Thunderbird or other email clients and have also come from different time zones, in case that is relevant. Attempting to send emails produces the message “lost connection” after a while. |

Are those settings for mail services provided by your UK ISP? If so, they’re probably expecting you to be connecting via their infrastructure, or expecting higher levels of authentication from you if you’re not. If this is the case, check that you’re supplying a full username and password, and that you’re using a secure connection (TLS). Have a look at whatever knowledge base is available from your ISP, to see if there are any hints. Otherwise, Rob’s suggestions look sound for sending (they won’t resolve being unable to reach your POP servers), but – remember that if you use an SMTP relay that isn’t the one associated with your email address, you do significantly increase the risk that your recipients’ mail providers will flag your emails as spam (or even discard them completely, without any notice) due to SPF and DMARC. |

Turning on STARTTLS under Security in Hermes accounts solved the problem, thanks to Steve Fryatt and someone here. I didn’t try Rob Andrew’s suggestion, but thanks for your interest. I hope you all had a good Christmas, and will have a good New Year. |
