Setting up an HP Laser Printer

It’s a long time since I set up my networked HPCP1525 printer for a RISC OS computer on the network, and I have forgotten how to do it except that it wasn’t as straightforward as a deskjet printer directly connected to the computer. I need to go through this again with another RISC OS computer. I didn’t find the User Guide helpful, it just said “Consult your network manager for more information”. Well, I am the network manager in this household and I don’t know! I could try ‘cheating’ and copy the file in Boot.Choices.Printers.Settings of the computer already set up to the new computer; but would that work, or do I need to do make other changes as well? I know that the connection is “print to file”, remote printer plus the network IP address. |

Yes, the connection is “File”. The string that should be entered is something like: RemotePrinterFS#proto=JetDirect;host=192.168.2.85;port=9100: (Of course, you should enter the printers actual network address after host.) Stefan Bellons RemotePrinterFS module is needed to make this work: www.sbellon.de/sw-modules.html |

This is what I have for my HP553N

I know the string to enter in the connections window, but I can’t even get to that point! On the Printers icon menu, I click on “Install new printer” and up pops the PrintDefs window, but my HP printer isn’t listed and I can’t see anything else relevant except possibly one of the Postscript ones. But on my older computer in the Postscript configuration window it says HPCP1525 is of “type” PostScript 3 and this type doesn’t appear, only PoScript2 or less. |

The HP CP1525 is a PostScript printer, so you either need the PoScript2 or the (commercial, from MW Software) PoScript3 driver installed. PoScript2 is a subset of PoScript3, so will drive the printer happily, but you’ll get better results with Martin’s PoScript3 driver. |

I used Martin’s PoScript3 driver plus his invariably good instructions. I hadn’t read his instructions and forgotten using the shift key together with select or adjust to get at the configuration and connection settings – a different way of proceeding from that via “Install new printer” from the iconbar Printers menu. I tried using select and adjust with shift on some other iconbar icons and for most of them the shift key made no difference; but try doing shift-adjust on the iconbar SparkFS icon – it surprised me. I wonder how many folk don’t know or had forgotten about the use of the shift key for the printer icons. |

Thanks Andrew and Martin, wherever you are in cyberspace, the network printer now works with Martin’s PoScript3 driver. By the way, other iconbar icons that gives different responses when the shift key is used together with select or adjust are StrongED, NetFetch and Messenger. Any others? |

Thump is shift aware but is possibly saving function for a later release?
