Networking Pi & A5000 using Access

Hi, I’m having some trouble networking My Raspberry Pi running RISC OS and my A5000. I want to copy all my data that’s currently stored on floppys and RISC OS formatted zip disks into a more manageable format. I know I can use Omniflop to image the floppys, but it would be much easier to network the machines for a short period to transfer the data, and there’s some larger chunks of data on the zip disks.

I have a Etherlan 500 card in my A5000 and I have connected it with Cat5 to a old wireless hub with 4 ethernet ports.
I have also connected my Pi to this hub

I have enabled Access on both sides. I am sharing the hard disk of the A5000. (share adfs::4 Elk)
Once (and only once!) I was able to see the share on the PI. I tried to connect to it and a red hourglass appeared counting down, then a blue hourglass appeared and counted down from 5. Then an error message popped up with a load of gobbledegook.
Now I can’t get them to see each other. I don’t know what I did, but rebooting machines, turning on and off etc – I just can’t get them to see each other anymore.

Fwshow just shows the individual machines.

Other options I have:
Direct connection between the two machine – take the hub out of the equation. Can I use a standard ethernet or do I need a crossover.
Configure TCP/IP – but I’m going to need a uniboot for the A5000 for that so that’s a bit a job getting that on it. I think I’d need a hand if it came down to this!

I’m a bit of a networking beginner when it comes to Acorn machines, and 3.1 in particular. It’s so frustrating because the share appeared briefly just for a short moment. :)

I mean the problem is that EtherUSB can only handle 100Mbit and the A5000 only 10Mbit.

If it is a duplex/speed mismatch, and you’re using a hub I’d think your knackered.
However if you have a switch handy, you may be ok.
You can pick up a bottom end gigabit netgear switch for not much, and they are really worth it IMHO.
There are 100Mbit ones for even less…hubs really are the work of the devil ;-)
