Blank Screen after Pi Upgrade

Attempted to upgrade my RISC OS Pi system this evening, from the original 5.19 stable release, to Beta Pi ROM RC11. Firstly, I installed the latest HardDisc4 files (by simply dragging across). I installed the ROM by renaming my existing RISCOS/IMG, copying in the new riscos rom file and naming this RISCOS/IMG. Hard reset and after that….a blank screen. The only sign of life is a green light flashing like mad on the Pi. On a PC, I was able to the swap the files back and re-boot my Pi with the original ROM. The window furniture now have a very psychedelic colour scheme, which is a little off-putting, but it’s still usable. I also tried the latest development beta version of the ROM, but had exactly the same problem. Googling for a solution, my problem seems very similar to Chris Dewhurst’s (which seems to have been solved by him ultimately giving up on upgrading to the latest version). Any suggestions, greatly appreciated! ps. Would an eventual successful upgrade solve the occasional issue of keeeyyyybboard repeeeeat? |

Stevyn, You need to download the RC11 ROM (riscos-2013-07-10-RC11.zip )from the Rappberry Pi website at: http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads Copy this image to your 2Gbyte SDCard using Win32DiskImager (or similar) on a PC (or a similar programme on a Mac or Linux box). Then update just the ROM image file on the RC11 SDCard to a more recent alpha build, if you want. Hope this helps, Ralph |

Thank you Ralph. Downloading the image now. This will be a complete new system won’t it? (I.e. I’ll lose my existing files/software if I don’t back them up first?) I’m happy to do this if it’s what’s required to upgrade, but just checking it’s the only way before I spend the evening backing up (a valuable exercise in itself I suppose). Stevyn |

Stevyn, Yes before writing the new image you need to back up all of your existing files that you want to keep from the old card. However, I’d strongly recommend backing up your files all the time – never rely on a single SD Card ! Ralph |

Try updating to the latest Pi firmware You need: bootcode.bin You may also want to double check on a PC that riscos.img is named correctly. |

Will give that a try too. Realised that I was using RC6 which seems rather out of date compared to 11 (if there are sequential numbers for the naming). The second difficult I have is a very temperamental SD reader on my Netbook. It’s now utterly refusing to work and it’s very frustrating being RISC OSless! |

If you still get a blank screen after trying everything suggested above, give this a go; Edit the config/txt file, and add the following at the top; disable_overscan=0 With recent ROMs, I can’t get a picture on my Atrix Lapdock without the above modification. |

I just updated to the 15-01-14 alpha and also had to add the overscan entries to get it to boot. |

Initially I thought this was limited to my Lapdock, but I’ve tried a couple of different monitors and they also require the overscan settings. I know Jeffrey Lee was looking into this, so chances are it’ll be sorted soon. |

This seems to be resolved for me in the 20-01-14 alpha |
