.iso what do you know?

I’m running a strongarm rpc with 3.70 in rom and 5.20 as optional softload. I visited the following archived software website: (https://archive.org) which has lots of Risc OS material including the old Risc Discs, Shareware archives and even Acorn Computers Ltd sources (see: https://archive.org/details/cdrom-riscos-replay). The downloads are available in ‘.iso’ format for the old Risc Discs etc so by downloading and writing to a disc, I shall be able to resurrect forsooth? Alas, nay. Now, I’ve tried zipping but all that does is well, zip it. I can only assume that somewhere along the line things got ‘windowsed’. And sure enough, the Rpc sees it as ‘IBM PC’. So where has it gone wrong? Sure enough, I did dowmload and write the file using windows.. But I have done this with other files albeit not .iso files, and they have been read fine by Risc OS, I always choose mastered as opposed to live file system and files are zipped. Why would the .iso for Risc OS discs now be in a different format? It just feels like they are even in non Risc OS format on the website although in truth, I suspect writing the .iso image to disc in Windows may be making the disc unreadable. Even when I try to hide it in a zip folder. Any thoughts? There’s lots of interesting stuff there if you can figure if out. Would trying RPCEmu help? Matt. |

If these are .isos they will be in the standard CD-ROM ISO format—it only supports 8+3 filenames for example, although there are Windows (‘Joliet’) and Unix (‘RockRidge’) extensions which do. Which version of Windows are you using? 7 and 8 can directly write the ISO to disc, but simply moving or copying the file onto a disc won’t do. On XP you will need additional software than can handle an ISO. If these are ISO images the OS on which you create them shouldn’t make a difference if they are written correctly—that’s what ISOs are for. |

I’m using Vista Home Premium, I’m going to have a fresh crack at it tonight. Thanks for the help. It just appears as a massive data file on the RPC so perhaps I’m not handling the .iso properly. Both these options look promising, either writing the ISO to disc correctly or using CDFaker to get it to mount successfully. Interestingly, last night I downloaded RPCEmu and installed the basic setup running 3.71. I was able to successfully mount the .iso images here where they loaded correctly. Which was more annoying than anything else, as I want them on the real machine! Yes I knew it was a universal format, hence thought it shouldn’t be too much trouble.. Unfortunately Roxio doesn’t recognise my disc drive. UPDATE: Having downloaded ISO Recorder v3.1, I’ve burned the images correctly and they are now recognised correctly by the Risc PC. Problem solved. Thankyou for the help on this, clearly I needed the right software on Vista to correctly burn the .iso image, something which has since become more standardised in Windows 7 onwards. Thanks again, Matt. |
