Risc OS not working on B+ pi

An error comes up about iboot and if I retry it repeats the same error or if I cancel it returns to just a basic risc os with just the apps folder with 4 standard apps and no hard drive icon or configure etc. Basically unusable. Is there a simple fix for this boot problem? I assume its meant to fully load the system and present a hdd icon on the icon bar. Very disappointing. I was expecting to have some problems but not being able to boot up was not one of them. Also is there any advice on configuring multi-boot configurations like risc os and xbmc? Also what is the expected max overclock for a pi with heatsinks fitted and a small fan? Lastly can you power a small fan off the pi board? The fan I’m intending to use is tiny but looks enough for this purpose. Is 1400mhz realistic overclock with heatsinks and fan. |

The model B+ has a micro SD card and thus no ‘card detect’ input. You may therefore need a more recent SD card image otherwise it will not be able to read the SD card at all – this sounds like the symptoms you report. RC12a released on 4th June 2014 addressed this and is available from the downloads page. Multi-boot combinations are supported in the NOOBS download from the Raspberry Pi Foundation site – the downside is that when you change from one OS to another, you will get a ‘clean’ install of the chosen OS on the SD card. Stuff you have added on previous occasions will have disappeared. You should be able to power a fan. 1400MHz is a wildly optimistic overclock. |

I’m using the very latest risc os image. Only downloaded yesterday from this site. I used the recommended app to write to a 16GB micro sd card and it seemed to work perfectly. I do have a second pi somewhere, a first release version with only 256MB memory. Perhaps I should find that one and see if the same software works on that, then at least I’ll know if its a B+ issue. I can use the same card in a card adapter. I don’t want to lose any data so the multi-boot option is out I guess. Anyway to launch another install from within risc os. I.e. xbmc. Is that wildly optimistic when staying within the guidelines or even if you overvoltage? Out of interest is there any known difference between the early pi’s compared to the most recent. Any improvement in manufacturing that allows later models to go faster? Is there any expected/realistic gain in speed from using heatsinks and fan, maybe 200mhz improvement lets say. The basic pi seems capable of running at least at 800mhz with no heatsink or fan and some have managed close to 1ghz. Also can you overclock the cpu more if you don’t overclock the gpu. What is the ratio of cpu to gpu on the chip itself. As the cpu is single core and not the latest arm architecture just wondered if it was a small part considering cache, gpu, io etc What is the best software for manipulating risc os image file and inserting new files into them. I’m unsure how you customise the download image. Sorry a lot of questions I know. |

One other question while I’m thinking of it. When you use a larger capacity memory card than the image can you then expand into the rest of it to fully utilise it. I.e. partition it and format as if a hard drive within risc os? I guess once I get into risc os on pi successfully this will be answered but curious. |

Re overclocking, see this recent thread: Standard Pi [700/250/400]: 994 frames/sec; For comparison, my Iyonix did 444 frames/sec, and the Panda at 1200Mhz approx. 2000 frames/sec. RPCEmu 0.8.11/5.20 on my 3.4Ghz PC does about 1150 frames/sec. Is this a good guide to real-world performance? Not necessarily: using !Thump to slideshow 12 JPEGs, the Iyo and Pi running at 900Mhz take virtually identical times. But it is a reasonable guide IMHO for Pi upclocking. |

That’s how I use the 16GB card on my Lapdock-Pi. Old Model A though. |

I’m using the very latest risc os image. This (‘image’) is ambiguous – the latest SD card image is 4 Jun 2014, the latest rom is today’s. What matters is not just the rom (which must be after 4 Jun 2014) but the START.ELF etc. firmware which must be after 4 Jun 2014 as well (i.e. at least RC12a). |

Providing you install all the OS’s you want at the start then you can happily switch between them at boot time with no loss of data. It is only a problem if you later decide you want to add an OS as then the card is wiped and resinstalled from scratch. |

In the end I just used the noobs installer and that worked perfectly. I also installed raspbian and the two media centre apps onto the same micro sd without problems. All works great. I’d recommend noobs over the installer on this site which for me didn’t work. |

For what it’s worth I’m running RiscOS on a b+ Pi. I just downloaded the .iso and burned it. I used the one linked from Raspberry Pi’s site. |
