BeagleBoard XM Blank Screen

I got my hands on a BeagleBoard XM for a reaonable price. It boots with Angstrom Linux, but not with RISC OS. I ran the !SDCreate utility, got the MIO and u-boot.bin files off the documentation site here, but all I get is a black screen. I Downloaded 5.22 Rom.

Something I am doing wrong? My MicroSD card from !SDCreate has boot.scr, CMOS, mio, RISCOS, u-boot.bin, and unenv.txt

Also.. I tried the Beagle Demo IMG.. won’t boot. I’ve got a Rev. C1. The only thing that boots is the Angstrom IMG from the Angstrom site.

Try to use mlo, uboot.bin from the working Linux card.
If it not work I can upload my C1 files. The C-board is not working with the B-files. I have both.

I tried swapping the files from the working Linux microsd but no luck either..

From a blank partition try loading the files in the following order;
MLO, U-BOOT/BIN, BOOT/SCR, UENV/TXT, RISCOS

This is the content of my FAT partition and this ist a image of a clean complete 1GB card. Clean means only the xM Boot part and the ROOL HDImage wihout any changes.
Edit: Not right. I use a compressed 5.22 ROM in both downloads (@Jeffrey, thanks a lot!). The uncompressed in the download area is not working with the Pandora. The compressed is working fine. I have not try to use the uncompressed with my xM.

Ok thanks Raik.. So the 5.22 ROM on riscosopen.org is really only for B models?

OK, I wrote out the compressed IMG and it lit up like a Christmas tree, saw the castle logo and got mode not supported.. so I am on the right track now!!! Thanks Raik!!

Edit: The card needs to be written out if the power is pulled suddenly.. it seems to corrupt the MicroSD. I got my old monitor out of storage and was able to see the RISC OS desktop.. so Raik, what do you prefer for storage? USB or a real HDD?

No. I think the ROOL ROM should be for all OMAP3 device. My is the same but I have compressed it. More you find in the bug area.
I think someone in your boot was not right. Maybe the order or what ever.
The bootfiles like mlo and uboot.bin was changed from the xM builder. The newer C revision files are working fine with the older B boards but the older B files not with the C board. Also with Linux.

Any MicroSD have problems. There is a compatible list in the net.
I boot from a 16GB systemdisc and have a USB HD as a additional storage. SDFS is faster than SCSIFS (USB).

OK. What is the best way to setup the system disk? Is there a tutorial? I will go to the store today and buy a MicroSD!

Looks like there was also an issue with the MicroSD card that came with the XM. I had another 64GB, which took the files no problem that Raik had provided. For shits and giggles I looked at the old MicroSD and even though !SDCreate says the files were there, they weren’t but copying them over begining with MLO worked. Right now I am preparing the 64GB MicroSD with 2 partitions, one for the Rom and the needed XM files. The other partition will be the Filecore where I will attempt to set it up as the boot drive. Yeah, the OMAP is kind of fussy about its boot files. Makes building a boot disc fun. I also start with the Angstrom image as nothing else seems to want to start up properly. But – did your Angstrom start telling you there was an unknown error every time you tried to configure anything?

Two ways I use to create a card.
First only SDCreate and a small card with the right bootfiles and the “harddisc” on a USBDevice. Is the old way before SDFS was aviable.
Better use !SystemDisc aviable from Piccolo Systems to create a bigger complete card.
Copy the content of my 1GB “emergency image” on it and collect all the Software you need.
You can also change the 2GB Raspberry Pi Image.

I just ordered !SystemDisc. Will it allow me to create another partition with the unused space Or can it be just one large partition? Just curious… I never got any errors with Angstrom, booted right to the desktop!

Yes, !SystemDisc will allow you to create ‘another partition’. When you first run it, make sure you pick the correct card (I suggest you use a card reader plugged into the USB port so it will be a SCSI device) as you will delete your present bootable card if not (done that just once or twice :-) ). What !SystemDisc does is it puts a Dos partition on the card but leaves the card formatted as ADFS (you need to firstly format it as ADFS). This Dos partition is readable under RISC OS so you can put the relevant files into it. As previously suggested, the MLO file HAS to be put in there first !

Not sure what the problem is. I have the same looking Angström for Beagle and xM and it works, I mean but I only play around. I not use this. For Linux I use a more powerful Laptop.
Other remark. I have a xM Rev.B and C. The Rev.C was delivered with a card that works stable with the Rev.B but not with the Rev.C. For Rev.C I must download and rewrite a new Image.
I remember there was also problems with the first Rev.C in RISC OS (anything in the videoarea was changed=blank screen).
Your problem must be a other one. My Rev.C works not stable with any cards. Read/Write errors. If I use the same card in a external cardreader, all things fine. My Rev.B works better.

OK, getting somewhere. I got the boot partition created successfully. Added the files to the bootable partition from the Harddisc4. I still get the:

RISC OS 512MB
Cortex-A8 Processor
Acorn SCSIFS

Waiting for boot drive to be ready; press Escape to cancel.

Did configure for SDFS and all working now! In !Store downloading apps!! Thanks everyone!
