FastDosBox

Hey All, I’m having a great time with the BB xM.. thanks to all who helped. I got DosBox running great, but just for sh**ts and giggles I got Windows 3.1 installed, while it runs, it is very slow. I stumbed across FastDosBox which shows the splashscreen and then quits. Is it supposed to show the CLI like DosBox? Is there any way to speed up DosBox? I found the 1.0 release of FastDosBox, but it doesn’t seem to work? Thanks to any info you can help me with.. Chris |

When you have it running, write up the install & configuration sequence for the wiki. |

Well I thought I did.. I added my mount entry.. it just opens, I see the DosBox Spalsh Screen and it closes. Regular DosBox runs fine as I mentioned before. |

Ok, I think I know what Raik was saying. I edited the !Run file and did ~/noriscnofun.conf and it created a new conf file.. FastDosBox now opens and created a fastdosbox-1/0/conf in my Unix Home directory. When I attempt to duplicate the changes in the noriscnofun/conf file … FastDosBox will not open.. When I put back the default CPU settings, FastDosBox will open. Windows fails to load however. |

I “only” play around with Win95, not with Win3.11 but I remember I create a file in !FastDosBox namend dosbox.conf and it works also. |

Will try it..thanks Raik! |

I have edit any things in the post before… ;-) My conf and the Win95 (German Ver.B)… You need a serial number to finished the installation and it is very, very slow. |

I had to disable alignment faults in order to get FastDosBox to run. Windows 3.11 on a Pi → http://www.heyrick.co.uk/blog/index.php?diary=20140808 How to get 800×600×256 (and why you won’t want to) → http://www.heyrick.co.uk/blog/index.php?diary=20140809 It is fun for a play, or for less demanding things like the DOS TurboC++; but for more important stuff, not worth it. Heavyweight apps (VB, Office, etc) won’t run as there is no equivalent of SHARE.EXE. |

I can get Win 3.11 working fine (although slow) under DOSBox. FastDOSBox just tanks each time. I will have to try some games under it later on. Couldn’t do anything with Raik’s conf file, doesn’t appear as a text file or editable under RISC OS. Thanks for all of your responses.. what a fun day! |

Try switching off alignment exceptions. |

Rick, Is that the BASIC code you posted on your site? Will it harm my BB xM? |

Good work, I’m out ;-)
Upps, is a older upload. Please download again.

Try AlignEx |

Thanks for sharing. I will test them out tomorrow night. I always learn something here. |

Success! I looked at Raik’s config file. I made three changes to mine.. core=normal and memsize=32 and frameskip=1 while it doesn’t turn FastDOSBox into a speed demon, wow boot time is way better for Windows 3.11. Also AlignEx was needed to keep FastDOSBox from crashing. Thanks all, that was fun!! Now to play some games.. |

Has this disappeared? I can’t see it available anywhere, i have an earlier version but it just completely crashes the system on RPI 3 with no errors. |
Raik (463) 2061 posts |
Yes it is. Looks like the second site is also gone. |

I figured it out. It was the video driver. I edited the config file and set it to use the S3 driver and not the TSENG driver that it was set up for. |

that would be ideal Raik! |

But how do you configure DOSBOX on RISC OS—at least, the version that comes with RO Direct? There’s no configuration files, and the “instructions” provided are for a non-RISC OS system. |
Raik (463) 2061 posts |
FastDosBox you find here . RO Direct comes with the “normal” DOSBox, I mean. Works a bit different but you find the “RISC OS notes” at the end of !Help file inside (or use menu on the App-Icon). |

Thanks to the above posts and Rick’s blog I have FAstDosBox working on my Pi 4. I do not have old Win OS discs any more. Before I buy a second hand version, I was wondering if Win 98 would work or would it be best to stick with Win 95? |
Steffen Huber (91) 1953 posts |
I think neither will work, DOSBox is firmly in DOS territory, i.e. no full x86 “386” emulation that is needed for Windows 95 to run (again, IIRC). Windows 3.11 will be the version you need. I think you’ll find it somewhere on archive.org. |
