US keyboard and Pico SD

I recently started to play with RiscOS on the PI, (to be more specific the Pico SD). It seems that the system defaults to a UK kybd, so things like @ " are in the wrong place for a US keyboard.

From the BASIC prompt (>) I do a quit to the * prompt, then issue ‘configure country usa’. But the keys are not remapped. IF i go back to basic though it now has a US keyboard. Mostly.
@ " are in the right place now but [, ], and \ are mapped to fractions.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

That’s strange. I just tried it here by giving the command *Keyboard USA (change layout on the fly) and using a diagram of the US layout from Wikipedia; and everything works as expected.

The British layout does not have the \| key between Enter and Backspace. The function of this key is replaced by the #~ key to the left of Enter (doesn’t exist on US keyboards). Our \| key is to the left of the Z key (doesn’t exist on US layouts).

Taking these differences into account, *Keyboard USA did exactly what was expected. Raspberry Pi Model B, RISC OS 5.21 regular, generic inexpensive USB keyboard.
Getting fractions is… strange. The last time I saw any fractions from a keypress was an ancient typewriter that had a key for 1/4 and another for 1/2. But none for 3/4, strangely enough.

Certainly not when set from the GUI. I’m not at home right now so I’ll need to defer to Alex for whether Configure Country has the same issue.

If the pico is using mode 7, then in the teletext font those keys are shown as fractions, or certainly backslash was on a bbc micro
