RO Six

Are there modules from RO Six that could be used with RO Five?
ie 32bit for the A9.

Thinking of the Toolbox modules -also the Internet/Resolver modules.

What are the differences between the Resolver modules?
VRPC and RO6/RO5 use different versions?

AIUI the RISC OS Six toolbox modules will work with the latest ROOL builds. The problem is that whilst quite a bit further developed than the ROOL toolbox modules they are not open source and development stopped a while back. Without that they are a dead end:-(
I’ve been trying to persuade those involved to grant an appropriate license/open source for more years than I can remember. IIRC about five of the contributors are more than willing but some are not I don’t think some of them will ever change there mind.
There is one good piece of news I posted on this forum on 7th June.
“Rik is going to give the sources of Toolbox Gadgets to ROOL:-) So that hopefully it can be incorporated into the official ROM builds!” (The Toolbox Gadgets Rik wrote from scratch)
All non toolbox modules not only suffer the rights problem, they also are nearly all highly integrated with RO Six and reliant heavily on other RO6 modules which might take more work to integrate into the ROOL sources than developing the ROOL modules.

Are you sure? Not having actually done any testing, I rather assumed they would not simply because of the amount they depend on other features of the OS not available in RO5. The ‘Image file’ gadget comes immediately to mind, but other documentation and the ‘Rambles’ suggest this, too.

The 2003 set of Toolbox modules from ROL, on the other hand, do work with RO5 and have some advantages, but I think it has been reported that they are not proof against the Zero page changes. They are freely available, but as you say, they do not have the source, so that effectively rules them out now.

Without that they are a dead end:-(

Yes. Just before relations broke down. ROL did pass to Castle all the toolbox sources, though will have been superseded since. I think formal rights were included in the disputed agreement, so arguable could be used but I suspect ROOL not being sure are taking the cautious approach of not relying on them.
