Gmail and Netfetch

Hi All, I have used RISC OS for the first time in a while. I have a problem with connecting to gmail to download my e-mail. The message I get in the hermes log is: “Error: [AUTH] Web login required: ”https://support.google.com/mail/answer/78754">https://support.google.com/mail/answer/78754" The URL is instructions for setting up Gmail using IMAP. Does this mean Gmail has stopped providing POP and I need to set up IMAP or has some of their pop settings changed. I had no problems previously and don’t think I have changed anything in e-mail / news settings. I have- Messenger Pro 7.06, Netfetch 3.66, Hermes 2.66, NewsDir version unknown. My OS is the nightly build of RISC OS 5.23 (28-10-16) as is my !Boot. The hardware is emulated using RpcEMU 0.8.14 (StrongARM Risc PC, 128M Ram, 2M Vram). Host os is Ubuntu 16. Becky. |

I think you find they have discontinued the non-SSL version. I don’t know whether v3.66 does the SSL required. A newer version of NetFetch/Messenger Pro may be required in order to connect with the SSL version |

I think you find they have discontinued the non-SSL version A while back it was necessary to upgrade the TLS library to use !POP3s. I connect daily using Alex’s utility. |

You may find that you need to use web-login to “re-activate” your account (or answer security questions). IIRC there’s an option on Gmail to allow legacy devices to connect to your Gmail account, and you’ll want to enable that. It may well be that that’s what’ll come up when you go to that URL. You can fetch via Hermes to your main drive, but better still use IMAP mode (just MPro) to access it directly. When setting MPro up to do IMAP, click menu over iconbar icon, and click on the word “Login…” (not the sub-menu) to open the login window. This will allow you to pick “IMAP”. The other big tip is to load the IMAP client directly by Shift-double-clicking on !Messenger, going to Servers and running !RemoteNB. The advantage of this is that you’ll see an iconbar icon for the IMAP bit, with menu and UI-windows. This makes it easier to configure. If you do it though MPro directly, and you don’t get your settings right, it can be fiddly to fix, whereas having the iconbar icon/menu/windows available makes it easier to go in and fix your mistakes. Once set up, just use it normally through MPro, but this way will make that first 15mins easier. If you’re using NutPi rather than full versions, please bear in mind that some SSL-based cuts were made to that edition to meet the low-price nature of that item. However, SSL-IMAP was, I believe, added to NutPi about 2 years ago, so it should be OK. We just did a set of revised versions for the NutPi 3 for London show, so would urge people to get that version. Basically every R-Comp application included in NutPi saw an update. Tech support for our applications is best handled direct via email, though, as I can’t promise to always see postings on the ROOL forums, and I wouldn’t expect our users to do our tech support for us :) |

Um, isn’t that “the modern way”? I mean, you try finding an actual Google employee to talk to. And others. Your first port of call is usually to whinge on a forum someplace and if you are very lucky an “expert” (who is likely not an actual employee, just somebody with a lot of free time evidently) may attempt to post some actual help instead of the usual forum responses and “help” pages that say wonderful things like “turn it off and back on again”. To be able to email the actual people that develop the product…? What are you smokin’ mate? Nobody does that any more! ;-) |

IIRC there’s an option on Gmail to allow legacy devices to connect to your Gmail account Yes although the only way to get mail by pop is the secure one, I still had to select the lesser secure model on offer by the gmail web interface. |

After several months break from messing with my computer, I have finally got the problem fixed after using Googlemail’s option which allows less secure applications to connect to it’s email service. Thanks for the advice guys. Rebecca. |
