Dear all I am wondering if there is any chance to use my HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 connected to my internet box via Wifi. But until now I have been unsuccessfull… Thank you for your help. François |

Inkjets need a PCL3 driver, I think. I’m new to RO so I don’t know if one exists but a standard PCL3 driver using the printer IP should work. You may have to manually set the IP address for the printer to a static one. |

Phosphorus trichloride? Maybe that explains why it’s cheaper to buy a new printer than a set of replacement cartridges. More seriously now – there is a good chance that the HP printer mentioned will accept PCL (edit – yes, PCL3e), given that it’s a de facto standard created by HP, however most domestic inkjet printers will not understand PCL, or any other page description language. Their processing is too simple, the data sent is a set of proprietary codes for stuff like head alignment and cleaning, and a CYMK bitmap of some sort that can be directly output to the print heads. Plus, unlike laser printers that work a page at a time, inkjets work on strips, so you will be unlikely to find many that are even capable of holding an entire page worth of bitmap in memory. Try it yourself – you’ll probably find that if you perform a regular colour copy (direct scan→print mode), it’ll move the scan head maybe an inch or two at a time, and even draft monochrome copy, you’ll be unlikely to read in more than 1/2 to 2/3 of the page before pausing. I had a look at getting some information on my cheap Pixma (MG2450, I think) but Canon weren’t willing to share information about anything made this decade. There’s a driver for Windows, and one for Linux, and maybe a Mac one too. For everything else…….. |

I am wondering if there is any chance to use my HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 connected to my internet box via Wifi. Can you tell us what type of RISC OS computer you are using? It may be relevant. When you are trying to set up RISC OS wit a networked printer, you might find it easier to try connecting the printer direct to the RISC OS computer via USB first, and set up the printer driver that way. Is that possible to do with your printer and RISC OS computer? Getting it working via USB cuts out the complication of the networking aspects, allowing you to concentrate on getting the printer driver working. I would advise using Gutenprint if it supports your printer. A PCL driver has been suggested but the Acorn PCL driver is old and does not support colour printing, so use Gutenprint if you can. Once you have it working when connected direct, you can then try the next step of changing the connection to a networked one. If you have bought network printer drivers from R-Comp then e-mail R-Comp for support with this bit: they are usually very helpful in supporting their products. |

PCL is a vague term. I believe this printer users a PCL3c+ driver, which is colour. Gutenprint has PCL drivers, I just didn’t know it was on RO. |

The RISC OS HP PCL printer driver does not support Colour. I’d expect trying to print using one of the HP PCL drivers would give a dithered output. |

I think I’m being misunderstood. PCL is the Printer Command Language and there are many versions from PCL 1 through to PCL 6. “HP PCL Driver” is so unbelievably vague, which is probably why there is confusion to what I am saying. Not all PCLs are equal. PCL 1 – 3 are mono and quite old. PCL 3+ is mono but PCL 3c+ is colour. According to here your printer needs a PCL3GUI driver. So PCL3GUI is the right fit. Gutenprint has a PCL3GUI driver, so that should work. As Matthew stated, check all works well with USB first. Then move onto network printing after. Will save yourself a headache. |

James you are correct, I should have restricted my comments about RISC OS not printing in colour to PCL4, 5 & 6. |

Hello I have been trying this morning to find an adequate driver for the printer and to print from USB. Thank you for your help. François |

Actually, it seems that none of the GutenPrint drivers works. I always get the error message “File ‘0000x’ not found”. |
James Wheeler (3283) 344 posts |
What version is it? |
François Vanzeveren (2221) 241 posts |
The latest available from the mw-softwares site: version 2.4.2 In the !ReadMe file, it is written that GPDriver2 is based on Gutenprint 5.2.5. Regards |

Is there a Generic PCL3, or Generic PCL3c+ driver? Might be called PCL3 Enhanced or similar? |
François Vanzeveren (2221) 241 posts |
Nope… here is the content of the Generic folder… It starts at PCL4 File name Printer name |

and in the HP folder,i have the following list: The weird thing is that, e.g., I can print with the driver DJ850C provided by default with RiscOS, but when I try the DJ850C provided with Gutenprint, I get the error message ‘File 0000x not found’… |

CJE/4D have this printer which apparently needs PCL 3 Enhanced. They also claim RiscOS support. Your printer supports PCL3 Enhanced according to the document I posted earlier. Somewhere on ARMini list, someone claims CJE have a PCL3 compliant driver for £25 and a simple test application to check it with your printer beforehand. Hopefully, someone from CJE/4D will pop by soon and give some help/advise on how to proceed. |

I will contact CJE/4D then. Thank you François |

Hello James & Chris I find out why it was not working with Gutenprint… I was using drivers from ‘PrinterG’ directory instead of ‘PrinterGp’. Using, from the right folder, drivers like DJ3820 or OJ7110, I have been able to print on my OfficeJet Pro 8610 via USB… But this is awfully slow… It is decently not conveivable to makle any serious work… I printed one PDF page and one OvationPro page, the speed was equally terrible! At least, now, I can print… for the price of 10 cup od coffees ;) Thank you for your help. François |

Gutenprint is a heavy framework and it’s a port from POSIX based OSes, but I believe CJE tailor made the driver for RO3.5 or later so it’s probably a lot more lightweight. This is just a guess. I don’t use either drivers on RO. |

When I first started using Gutenprint, I found it extremely, unacceptably slow. Eventually I realised that the resolution was far too high for normal use. I reduced it and it now runs at an acceptable speed – though nowhere near instant! |
Chris Evans (457) 1614 posts |
With our test printout file all the time to render the page was done when we created it, so no driver can be that fast. |
Steffen Huber (91) 1953 posts |
Regarding the speed of Gutenprint: it depends a lot on the printer to be used. There are large differences both in terms of speed and in terms of memory consumption. Maybe it is time to recreate the TurboDriver experience :-) |

Voilà, I invested in the driver from CJE/4D and it works marvellously well… Speed is fantastic, even in higher quality. It definitly makes my RaspberryPi under RiscOS a viable solution for home office work and development (BASIC and C). Wouaw! I am so excited! Of course, one could argue this is not cheap solution, considering that the softwares (CJE driver + R-Comp NP) needed to make it work is almost as expensive as the printer itself… but passion and pleasure do not care! Cheers! François |
