Could I arrange to have somebody come and kick me in the shin every time a “brilliant idea” interrupts me from doing the previous “brilliant idea”? I’m sure a queue or rota could be arranged. |

No problem. But would you like it preemptive or cooperative? |

I’m likely to be uncooperative at the time. |

If brilliant ideas are the problem, you could leave the thinking to me. |

“Brilliant” is, of course, relative, rhetorical, and probably satirical. |

Most of us are full of ideas, possibly brilliant. They do say, if you want something doing well ask a busy man. Do note that asking yourself does count and voices in your head is normal. |

I’m currently debugging the Wimp because… Not included: The other interruptions I actually completed. |

But would we recognise a potentially brilliant idea? I could have invented Instagram. No, seriously. Way back when I had a brief play with the concept of tagging and sharing photos. They were in the order of one megapixel in those days (plus a lot of dialup). Photos would have been 16:9, not square, as I’m an advocate for widescreen. And there would have been no white borders because that’s either “annoyingly retro” or “your printer is too cheap to make it to the edge of the paper” depending on how I feel… So, the question stands. If we had a great idea, would we necessarily recognise it as such? |

To avoid this scenario, I write everything. This strategy is not currently working for me. |

I could have invented the laser printer. Except that lots of other people invented it at much the same time, because the necessary underlying technology had just become available and given that, the idea was pretty bloody obvious. And I didn’t have a multi-million tech company’s patenting department to hand. |
